He only showers about once every ten days or so and we're on an athletic team together, so he smells very bad. He hasn't washed his clothes in over a month and just keeps "recycling" them out of the dirty clothes pile. He is always on the phone at all hours of the day, to make matters worse he has the bass cranked up on his computer and it keeps everyone awake on my side of the floor, and not to mention he has so much stuff plugged into your DSL outlets that my internetruns about 1/100th the speed his does. What do I do? I want to be nice about it, but it is becoming rather offensive and our room has a very strange odor because of it.

Tell him what you think is unfair to you, and if he doesn't change or at least try to, well, go do something about it. Take action, if you guys are room mates, then he has to take some responsibility and keep stuff in order..But air out the room, and give him a little hint, or try to before you tell him.

You need to sit down and have a talk with him. If need be, have a moderator with you in case he gets offensive. This way, you can keep it from escalating into an argument rather than a discussion. Let him know that when people live together, they need to be courteous of others needs and not just their own. This includes personal hygiene. If things still don't change, consider moving or getting a new roommate. But if it comes to that, make sure you have a talk with him first. Even though it may not seem like it, he could even be oblivious to how bad his behavior is and how it is affecting you. So let him know, just don't randomly kick his butt out, and see how things go on from there. Good luck!

Tell him that he needs a SERIOUS change. To be somewhat nice about it, try and give him the message by getting Febreeze, or some other deoderizer, and do his laundry for him. Try and tell him something like this: "Dude, you smell."

For the interenet and phone thing, tell him that he should seriously consider using the library more often, or getting a wireless, and also spending more time on his schoolwork than on the phone. It may sound kind of mean, but hey, you can't live like that forever, and in a way you are actually helping him.

Either that or get a new roommate

Tell him he's a pig! Say, "Look man, you are disgusting. You need to shower are least every other day. Do your laundry once a week...and be a little more thoughtful to those around you. It sounds like your roomie had it too good back home. Perhaps his mother did everything for him and he just doesn't get it. If you are in a dorm, consult the head of your floor. I feel for you, that he is so piggy like. That's got to be awful. If it doesn't help and he doesn't straighten up, request to be moved.

Poor personal hygiene is a possible symptom of mental illness. Does your roommate show other possible signs of depression, such as change in appetite or sleeping habits? I'm worried about him. Mental illness often comes out in a person's twenties (and I assume you are college students). You might want to mention to your roommate's coach and/or parents that you are concerned about him, and see if you can get him to pay a visit to the university counseling center for a psychological evaluation.

You need to be assertive, don't worry quite so much about offending him as getting the point accross. Being sloppy and noisy is easy to talk about. Being stinky is harder to broach. Try hanging an air freshner or buying spray.

Step 2, when it's time to re-up, get yourself a new roomie.

Tell him the truth . Maybe he needs a wake up call , and no one ever told him he stinks and is rude. Get another roommate, and let him continue to wallow in his filth.

Move or kick him out. If it were one of these issues I'd say work on it, but you're not his mother or sibling. Get away!
