One encyclopedia definition claims as early as the 4th century. (1)The fact is, it is nothing the true early church practiced as anything Christ taught by example or instigated. It is simply a vain tradition of men who were departed from the truth first delivered to the saints which is Christ, the cross and the resurrection.
The Lord's Supper however is another matter. That is how we remember the Lord's death until He comes again. There is no scriptural basis for other external practices except for water babtism and fasting.
