Nobody really knows; it's not even universally agreed that they exist at all. The prevalent perception is that a ghost is a restless spirit (e.g. a soul) which cannot move on to its eternal rest due to extreme torment, unfinished work, or extraordinary attachment to someone or something in life. Ghosts tend to be associated with the place of death or burial, although some are attached to places which were significant in life, and some seem able to move around. Ghosts attached by unfinished issues in life are the kind most commonly contacted by those who claim to be able to communicate with spirits. In theory, some ghosts may 'move on' if the reason for their attachment is resolved; for example, the ghost of a murder victim may remain until the murderer is found and punished.

In other cases ghosts appear to be merely the echoes of people who once lived, and may have no apparent reason or purpose for staying around. These ghosts rarely seem to communicate and simply go about a repetition of things they did in life, with no apparent awareness of the passage of time in the living world.

It is not agreed whether poltergeists are actual ghosts or a type of malicious spirit unconnected to humans.

There are three types of "ghosts."

1. The spirit of a deceased person/animal.
2. A "re-run," which is not actually a spirit. This is the re-enactment of a heavily emotional (usually negative) event. This event has been "tattooed" on the location in which it happened. These ghosts cannot be interacted with, but only seen or heart. (For example, people claim they have seen re-enactments of the battle of Gettysburg.)
3. Demons, etc. These were never people and can be interacted with, but are very dangerous.

There are also poltergeists, but they are not a type of ghost. Poltergeists are manifestations of high energy, usually generated by a teen or preteen living in the home in which it exists. The energy manifests itself in moving/thrown objects, generally, although things like smells do occur.

residual energy
that is energy that remains after a strong pressence in an area
much like the energy you feel after walking into a room full of happy people but knowing there had just been some tension...
this energy is not conscious but if powerful enough can not only be felt but seen as it manifests

this is not spirit as spirit are a conscious energy

They're people who have seen your mother's face. BURN! HAhahahahaha...

Ok, you gotta admit you walked right into that one. Anywho, ghosts are non-existent. Hope that helps.
