Although I believe he is just playing you must train him that bitting people is unacceptable. When my dog is particularly nippy I shove a bone in his mouth. You can offer him something better like a bone or rope toy. That should appease him for a bit. Never slap, hit, or hurt a dog. Violence begats violence. Especially on the nose!!! They are very sensitive on the nose as it is filled with nerves. That is a real good way to get yourself hurt.

FYI Shelly ... If you train your dog that a muzzle is a bad thing you sure are going to have a hard time at the vet if he ever needs one. All you are doing is training the dog that a muzzle is bad. You are not addressing the issue which is the dog's bitting.

If it's a puppy, he just wants to play. If it's an older dog, then there may be that reason or a completly different reason.

If you have a bigger dog (like a Golden or a lab) squirting water probably won't help, but it may work with smaller dogs. Say "NO" very firmly when you squirt him.

When he bites you, take his lower cheek and press it against his teeth. Not enough to cause major pain, but a discomfort. He may yelp, but that will tell him that it will hurt when he bites.

Or you could try this. Smacking an aluminum pie pan near him will tell him "If I bite, that thing makes a scary noise." And most likely he will stop.

He's not biting you for no reason. He's biting you for no reason you can see. He has a reason- you just have to find it.

The answer will be in what happens right after he bites. Do you scream? Do you give him something? Do you go away and leave him alone? Do you put him outside or in his crate? Do you play with him?

Whatever usually happens after he bites is the reason he bites. He bites to get that. So, if you normally put him outside when he bites, now you must stop putting him outside when he bites, but look very carefully for something he does that you like and let him out then. (Or just wait until he STOPS biting, and then put him out.) Or if you play with him after he bites, never do that again, just get up and leave the room for a couple of minutes.

is this a pup that is playing? is it a visious attack? your not giving us a lot to work with.
But to start obedience training, when the dog bites you, you should immediately put a muzzle on it for 5 minutes. everytime it bites it gets a muzzle for 5 minutes eventually it will get the hint. Don't hit the dog or use shock treatment.

Change your hand lotion or keep it and take it as a compliment. If he keeps coming back for more must mean he liked what he sampled.

Although now you can't use the 'don't eat me I taste bad' excuse. Darn.

I have a 115 pound Rottie Mastiff mix. when she wants my attention she grabs my hand in her mouth and pulls it. Usually she wants to go out or she wants me to get up early on Saturday. Your dog is trying to communicate with you, it is trying to say something like take me out, feed me, or play with me... When you find out what they want you will better understand how to understand their different signs and signals...
