Its real. The jews pray for the dead and I think the Moslems.
I had trouble with it but I pray for my family and loved ones and realized I believed in Purgatory since it would make no sense if they were already in Heaven or Hell or in the ground to stay. Its in the bible without using the word Purgatory. Maccabees.
More than a Catholic idea as said by bigots of man made religions that weren't around in the middle ages.

Real and found in the Bible.

Nothing unpure can make its way into heaven, so if some has repented of their sin and on their way to heaven, but they have some imperfection--maybe an attachment to sin--the must undergo a painful purging process called purgatory.

Paul writes about it in 1Corinthians 3:14-15:

"If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. "

The burning is purgatory. We suffer loss, but are saved.

Purgatory is not to confused with limbo, a sepeculation that is no longer mainstream regarding unbaptized babies and those who have had no oppertunity to accept or reject Jesus. Purgatory is not a second chance, all souls in purgatory are on the way to heaven.

It's not Biblical, but the Catholic Church presented the idea in the Middle Ages (500-1500 AD).

I suppose it was just another attempt to gain power.

People could pay money to the church to relieve a certain amount of years from purgatory. i.e 100 florins for 50 years.

The Bible says Jesus saved us. We don't pay for or earn salvation. It's a gift. The Middle Ages were the beginnings of corruption in the Catholic Church.

The Word has remained the same, however.

That like most questions about Bible reference depends on your particular interpretation of scripture. Many people (Catholics for example) believe that man is destined to receive at least some punishment prior to going to heaven because the Bible states that all will be judged according to their works (lives). On the other hand, non Catholics tend to believe that because Jesus paid for our salvation that we no longer will have to suffer punishment. I realize that this is not a good answer to your question but like I said at first, it all depends on interpretation. If I may inject a personal opinion here...I tend to shy away from specific disagreements between religions because they are all based on one thing...opinion of or interpretation of a particular scripture. For example, Baptists believe that you must be physically submerged in water, some other religions require no such act. Instead, I cling to the things I see as "truths" that all Christians agree upon. God is the creator, Jesus was his son and came to save us from our sins. The rest is window dressing. God Bless.

It's manmade. The church came up with it to appease the feelings of women who had lost children before they were able to be baptised, and for people who died before Christ was alive. That way they could make it seem like God wasn't such a hardass.
