Here is the dilemma: They have a cat that is about 2-3 years old. I live in Connecticut and it's freezing here and no matter what time of day, what the weather is, this cat is outside ALL THE TIME. I have two cats of my own and when i go outside to call them in, she comes running too. I feel bad, but i left her outside and took mine in. Well, one day one of my housemates came up to my apt. and said there was a cat that got locked in the basement and he wasnt sure if it was mine, he just heard it meowing for days. So i went downstairs and it was thier cat. I picked it up, carried it next door and said, "i think this is your cat, he has been locked in our basement for days" The woman just said "oh" and i handed her the cat and she dropped it outside. They used to have food dishes outside for it and now they dont so i have been feeding it daily, ect but i cant keep it. my apt is too small.. so they obviously dont care about this cat..

IS IT OK TO ADOPT OUT THIS CAT TO A LOVING HOME?

Shelters around here will not take cats, and the cat rescue projects are full.

And if you saw the size of my apartment, i have too many pets as it is.. it's tooo small.. and the other kitties dont get along with this one inside the house.

P.S.
I already have someone who is willing to take it in. I was just wrestling with the moral dilemma before handing the cat over

Been there, done that. GO FOR IT.You are only helping an unwanted animal from suffering - if the ASPCA heard about this, they would take the cat too.

It's not a problem at all. If you neighbor isn't taking care of the cat and you are take the cat to a no kill shelter and say that you found the cat outside. Some shelters won't ask questions about the owner if you say something like that. No cat deserves to have an owner that doesn't care about them.

You know, I would think twice about it. It would be even more immoral if you didn't find it a good home. Like you said, they obviously don't care. They would probably think that the cat just got run over, ran away etc. You, in your heart, would know that you had done the right thing. I think adopting the kitty out is a wonderful idea. You should do it. You know, what they don't know won't hurt them! Sounds like they could care less anyway.

Have you contacted the CT Humane Society with this situation? They usually will send some one out to look at the cat and talk with the owner. I would suggest to call them and ask, if you already haven't done so. The main building is in Newington, they have several other small places around the state. The only other one that I am familiar with is in West Port. Hope this helps, it's so cold outside for that poor cat to be left out all of the time.

i would go for it. give the cat a chance to be loved, warm, safe and happy. it is evident by what you said that they don't love or care for the cat.
1)with the weather as cold as it has been, advisories are out to take pets inside.
2)they no longer feed her
3)when you took it to her she did not say anyting acknowledging that this is her pet,in fact she just dropped it outside. if she cared she would have said thank-you,and showed she was worried about the kitty being gone for so many days by hugging the animal and/or checking her over for injuries. people like that don't need a cat.

I say give the cat to a loving home, he obviously wants one since he keeps trying to come in with you. Don't feel bad that you don't have room in your place for it, we do what we can. If you are seriously more concerned about morals, ask them straight up if they no longer want the cat and tell them what you have arranged if they say they don't want the cat. Of course, by doing this you are alerting them to you plans and if you should proceed and they told you not to, they will of course know it was you. It doesn't sound like they will notice if you give the cat to someone who will love it.

There are many irresponsible owners that do not truly care about the welfare of their cat and they don't deserve to have one! You would be doing this cat a great service to find it a loving home.
Cats are much safer inside and they are just hoping this cat will either die or go away. Please do what is right and find it a good loving home.

Morally wrong, NO. Humanely right, YES!
Anything you do at this point would be better than the life the cat is living now. Obviously the owners wouldn't even notice the cat was missing, so no great worry there. Giving this poor creature a chance is the best you can do, so do it NOW.

And good for you that you care enough to save a life.
The sad thing is that jerks like this will soon find another animal to neglect and abuse.

It's wonderful to see that you are concerned for the welfare of this cat.

If the cat is truely being neglected and is left in the basement for days, it's unlikely that the owners/neglecters will notice that it is missing.

If you can find a loving home for this cat, you should certantly try to place him there.

I would definitely find a good home for the poor cat. If that is all that they care about the poor dear, they will never miss it and probably don't even care about it.This is a case of animal abuse, as they are not even feeding it at this time. At least put her back in the basement with a litter box and a bed ,and food till you can find her a home. At my place----the cat would disappear. These people don't even deserve an explanation as to where she went, because they don't care!!!!!
