You can apply at the Sheriff's Dept or the Police Dept.in some counties it is different. Some times the Sheriff's Dept is the one that has the dispatchers. You will have to go to school to to be certified. You will have to be certified NCIC & ?CIC(what ever state you live in first letter goes where ?mark is) They will send & pay for you to go to school. They will also send you to a psychiatrist. It is not easy being a 911 dispatcher you will have to have nerves of steel and sometimes it will still get to you. Good luck. Hope this information helps!!!!

First of all, there is alot more to it then just answering a phone. That's about 3% of the job.

Second, most places require you to be 21 before applying.

Third, they will do an extensive background check after you apply, if your a felon, forget about it. They may also do a psych test, polygraph and a few other tests to make sure you can do it.

After you find a place you think you want to work at, request to do a sit-a-long to make sure that work environment is somewhere you want to work.

Many places require experience as training is very difficult and lengthy.

Yes, go to the Police department as this is done usually under them. In some town/cites it is the fire department who handles the switchboard. In that case then it is them who handle the hiring. High school ed is good enough as ALL you do is answer the phone. Once you are hired then you must be 911 operator certified. This is done after you are hired as a rule.
