ask your mentor in a proper apprenticeship program. Unless you know what youre talking about me telling you a humming phoenix works great for black and grey isnt going to mean **** to you. There are many different needle groupings related to whatever effect or thing oyu are trying to do, ie lining or shading. Go talk to your mentor like you should or be like every other scratcher with a sewing needle.

to the person above the number relates to the number of needles not the size, a 3 bugpin and a 3 carbon have different sizes but still three needles

the smaller the needle, the better it is for details and lining the tattoo. the larger the more it is for filling in, shading, ect. such as when you get a solid chinese symbol or something. they would use a bigger needle. normally in sizes 3 to 14, the higher the number, the larger the needle.
