Well, while they are called a counselor, they aren't usually qualified for counselling that is commonly associated with mental issues or problems associated with things liked behavioral disorders such as ADHD or ADD and that type of thing. Don't misunderstand me, they do have some of the qualifications to handle these, but not all. Basically, they are generally there to help point students in the right direction education wise, i.e. SATs, ACTs, college apps, scholarship apps, etc. Occasionally you will find that some bigger schools have counselors that are more qualified to handle other problems like the behavioral problems and such, but most schools nowdays are so underfunded and overloaded with students that even if they had these types of counselors available, most students with problems would be overlooked.

I recall being in high school my senior year, 7 years ago now, and honestly, I got more advice about problems in my life, like personal problems and advice dealing with my bi-polar disorder and behavioral issues and fighting with my parents and general things that you would expect a counselor to be able to handle from my principal. He was actually a wonderful person to talk to and gave wonderful advice, even though he didn't have the qualifications to be considered a counselor, he was much better than the two women we had that were, and he was always available to any student, when they rarely even showed up for the appointments that they scheduled.

I would say it would truly depend on your school system and how it stands politically (oh this is most definitely a very important part of how these things go) and financially as to how well your area school system's counselors will be qualified to do their jobs.

In some schools the counselors do nothing more than help kids pick their classes and apply for college. In others the counselors work with kids in a variety of issues, emotional and academic. They could offer help on test taking skills, help kids through the difficult emotions of being a teenager and make referrals for outside therapist or family help.

School counselors are there to help you with whatever you need help with. And yes they can help with test taking skills, figuring out what you want to go to college for, home problems, friend problems, anything you need to talk about. Go for it and give it a shot, it is a positive experience.

School Counceler i would think is a very diffeclt job. If u work in a low school like an elementary school, it will mostly be with problem solving among the peers, helping out with standerdizing tests, help plan school events, along with these, probely in the high schools and Jr. High schools, they deeal with more heavier and more complex problems with kids, and they can help u with applications to the next school level, give u advise about your health. I would be very stressed out. Hope that helped.

You're supposed to come up to them and tell you your problems.
I think that if you are getting bad test scores they can help you, as well as like problems at home and issues with students and teachers you have.
