I LOVE AMERICA bc its unlike any other country. I have my own answer but wish to know yours.
Many people that live outside the USA complain verbally attacking America saying nasty things about it. All I can say is:
I am greatful to America because it has PEOPLE THAT CARE FOR OTHERS WORLDWIDE. When most other nations dont care 4their own. It has business, technology and medical advances for people who need it 2survive. I owe myLIFE and survival to America's greatest ppl.

America has helped many people in many countries. In times of need, disaster, who they run to when struck by disaster? America is involved in charity to how many countries?
America indirectly sustains the economy of many other countries by giving jobs 2ppl when their own Nations cant offer securityOr$.It sustains countries directly providing expertise, sharing technology etc. foreigners bickerV.S. America YET they shop in USA.
America provided cars (Ford Chrysler etc) and computer tech to most 3rd world countri

I just feel that is so hipocritical of all those countries and their ppl who bash America, do not live here, yet come to shop here coz their country's materials are too expensive or too low quality.
Complaints against all Americans is like saying all Germans are Nazi. WRong.

I am tired of ppl who attack this country. I am not American yet consider myself American from living here 24yrs and having met the most giving ppl, the most understanding, caring, conscientious, most non racial (we dont have gorilla guerrillas). WE can walk without fearing a goverment entitity kidnaping us at gun point and shooting us for expressing our opinion (as Venezuela does and many other countries). People still have rights here, in other countries ppl have no rights. I have met strangers that helped me when in other countries rich strangers would only help themselves. The heroism of our troops is unparalleled. The patriotism high. I have only seen cowardness from other countries yet theybash THE USA

The reason is because, for the time being, America is the only "superpower" left in the world, after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Of course, this idea is not new -- with the Monroe Doctrine and the Roosevelt Corrolary, America has taken a position since the early 19th Century that we have a job to do in protecting our neighbors. With the fall of the Soviet Union, America is the only country with sufficient resources to take action unilaterally or lead it collectively to (a) protect our interests, (b) protect "democracy" (whatever that means), (c) take a stand for human rights, and (d) use power to generally provide for peace and security (at least in the countries we care about). Regardless of whether it's a good idea, American involvement abroad has at least prevented nuclear war a few times and, I hope, has saved more lives than it has cost.

The interesting thing will be what happens when China, India, and the EU rise to an equivalent level of power. (China, once it gets its head out of its @$$ and realizes that it should be responsible, India, once those people get mobalized and really start making $$, and the EU, once they stop bickering and get united politically and economically). Then maybe America won't have to be so involved (and we can spend more of our money on ourselves rather than on extended militaries and foreign aid), or of course, America could just fall off the map into obscurity under its own debtload and attempts to be the bully.

They are confusing two separate and distinct foreign affairs policy. That of Bill Clinton and that of George Bush.

Bill Clinton thought America should be a policeman to the world.

George Bush does not. George Bush's foreign policy is that of a preemptive strike. Quite simply, his intelligence stated that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. And many Americans got scared. They thought that if Al- Qaeda ask him for those weapons, Hussein would not hesitate to give them to him. So you have to strike preemptively before such a scenario can arise.

George Bush and Donald Rumsfeld also had a theory that by instituting a democracy in Iraq that would act as a catalyst to other countries in Iraq to push for democracy in the same way the French Revolution was a catalyst for Europe. Poverty is the breading ground for terrorist recruitment. They had a theory that a democracy, would raise the standards of living, and people would not be drawn to terrorist ideology. For more info on this theory go to http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/iraq/themes/beyond.html

Before the war, Bush's top Generals were saying that America would need 450 000 troops for a successful campaign. But Bush did not listen to them and instead invaded with 1/3 of the amount. And that is why they are now having problems in Iraq.

The way you counter these people is by asking them if they think the world would be better off without America. Would Britain have been able to withstand the Nazis without the shiploads of supplies from America? Did she have a problem when America intervened back then? Or does she believe America should only intervene if it is in her self interests.

Has she ever heard of the quote "Those who see an injustice and do nothing about it are just as guilty as those who commit the injustice in the first place". Does she really believe the world would be a better place if everybody minded their own business.

Since the early 1900's the economic and military power of the US has pushed us into a world leadership position. We have for the most part tried to look after the interest of the world as a whole and not look after solely our own interest. Sometimes we have succeeded and sometimes we have not.

Currently we have been more self centered in our policies and have not been diplomatically responsive to our fellow world citizens. I think when the "cold war" ended we withdrew a lot of the mechanisms that helped us to keep in touch with the rest of the world.

Also, remember that in the past 100 years we as a nation and we as individuals have often been in the fore front of the "good " things that are being done in this world. I hope this is remembered and offset against the negatives.

I would turn the question around and ask it this way.

If not the USA then who?

If a country that has the moral obligation to right those wrongs it sees doesn't do it what does it say about those people?

The USA must be the worlds police because no one else is able and willing and too many nations and people will take advantage of the weaker nations and people.

This speaks to the baser nature of humans, we pray on our weak.

Someone has to do it, as a citizen of the USA i demand to know why other nations don't stand up and be counted and help with being the world's policeman. What is wrong with them, are they lacking in the moral and ethical compass that shows them they need to stand up and be counted against the wrongs of the world?

Basically, the U.S. is placed in that position. America responds to a situation. America is not proactive - that's obvious - look at our energy crisis as proof. America has a propensity to respond promptly to problems of a foreign nature while procrastinating on problems of their own.

It is important to realize that outside pressures are often the catalyst that determines U.S. foreign policy. Quite often, these requests are, for political reasons, presented behind closed doors. Many of the hidden causes for U.S. reaction to foreign situations will remain secret for many, many years due to political sensitivity. For example - many of the agreements made during WWII, between the allies, are still not open to public scrutiny. In fact, I wouldn't doubt that some of the facts regarding our colonial rebellion are still buried somewhere .....in England.

Come on Jaghoppasigen, be truthful for once. You know very well that it was your late father who used to ask that question; the English woman simply quoted him. (And incidentally he was a Mexican of Spanish descent, and had no blood ties to England at all). And did you notice that some of the replies here actually agree with your late father?

I personally don't give a crap about what people in other countries think about us. Where do they emigrate? Here!
Whose politics do they follow? Ours!
When they have a problem, who do they go to for aid? US!!!
In fact, there have been times we have been chastised for "not doing enough" to prevent another country's problems. But yet, people still complain we stick our nose in their business.
Perhaps if they would learn to deal with their own crap, we wouldn't have to for them!!!

People who complain of U.S. dominance are either jealous losers or they are utopian minded socialists who would probably run the planet into the ground in they had their way. I just ignore them and know that the U.S. has the power because we have succeeded where others failed. Part of evolution, I suppose.
