Relax. Some children just don't talk until they reach three years old...perhaps you have one of these :)
If you are really concerned, ask your doctor to refer you to a speech therapist.

The average 21 month old should have at least 20 understandable words, By 30 months they should have at least 50. These are just averages though. You can call your local early start program for a free evaluation. Call the local school district to see if they do it, if not they will know who does. He may just need some speech therapy to catch him up. Don't worry too much though, some kids are just late talkers, and it's more common in boys.

A lot of kids, particularly boys are not very quick talkers. If he's concentrating on learning different skills, like running, jumping or how to scribble on paper, it may be that he's decided talking is not a priority for him just now, especially if he is happy with his ability to communicate to you non-verbally.
Other factors can include hearing a second language, either from yourselves or care-givers, or even a different accent. We are Scots, living in Texas, and our daughter was later talking because the same word sounded so different depending on who was talking to her.
If your ped is happy with his development, then relax, it's quite normal, and he'll catch up in his own time. In the meantime, if he is getting a bit frustrated with his ability to communicate, try some simple sign language, backed up with speaking the word at the same time. Most kids get the idea of sign language quicker than speech, and it can re-inforce his desire to talk. Also, try singing simple kiddie songs and see if he is interested in singing along, it makes the idea of speaking much more fun!

My son is 18mths and he babbles in his own language in complete sentences with hand gestures and the works. He knows abt 50 words that he uses only when necessary but he understands practically everything that my husband and I tell him. He just basically refuses to quit babbling!
Don't worry or rush or push your child. He'll talk eventually. Who's to say when you started talking but you're doing a fine job of communication now I'm sure.
Relax and enjoy his babble while at the same time reiterate the names of objects by pointing to them.
He'll talk when he's good and ready and not a minute sooner.

Well he is only 2yrs old you should not expect him to be talking full blown, but if you are very worried take him to an experienced doctor and if he things some thing is wrong he will recommend you see a speech therapist, and again some children are very slow in doing things while some are fast.I dont think really anything is wrong but just take him to see some professional like i mention. Good luck.

You may need to have his ears checked. I know that my 2 year old was having some problems before we had tubes put in her ears in October...now she is talking like crazy and is very understandable! Especially if he has alot of ear infections!

Just talk slowly and clearly to him. Have him repeat word abck to you. With our son the doc was talking about cutting that flap of skin under his tongue cause it was too tight. I would sit with picture books and point at pictures and say them and ask him to say them. Slowly we got that skin to stretch enough that we can understand him. HE is 6 now and my little chatterbug. Sing songs with him too.. anything fun for him to do to get that mouth moving!!

my first daughter at 2 could say mom mom , da da, and ju (juice) and I don't know what happened about 3 months later she started talking and hasn't shut up since (now 3 and a half). all kids do things at there own pace, If your doctor isn't concerned then you shouldn't be either.

believe me when your son starts talking he will do it. There is a lot of people in history that made a big impact on stuff. that didn't talk until they were six. just practice words with him. So when he is ready he will talk.
