some one believed that he could do it so he tried not to disappoint some one he cared about and succeded. there's a similar quote to this one, it's something like, you believed i could do the imposible so i did it because i couldn't bear to disappoint you... so basically it means that having some one believe that you can do it gives you confidence to do (or try) something you previously thought imposible, it reassures you, lets you know that at least someone thinks its posible

Grant was a leader, but you can't be a leader without followers. He was talking to the followers or the ppl who believe in him.
