Now is the correct time to be peeling. I like that you are saying it is peeling in flakes - scabbing as others describe here is NOT a normal phenomenon of tattooing. In most cases, if cleaned well a couple hours after the tattoo, the fluids that accumulated will be removed and you will not have scabbing.
Liken the tattoo to having a sunburn. That outer layer is damaged and must peel off. It is trapped with color so it looks like color is coming off. The reason it looks so light is that when the fresh epidermis appears it is rather opaque and does not take on its normal transparent appearance until healed yet another week or so.
Newly peeled tattoos often look light and almost shiny - give it some time and follow your tattoo artist's aftercare instructions.

Hi there!
I've had three tattoos and all three of them peeled the way yours is, theres nothing unusual about it at all.
Make sure the moisturiser you put on it has a sunscreen in it. The WORST thing for a tattoo is the sun as it fades quickly.
Like the others said, do NOT pick at it, or you will aggrevate it more and that's when you risk the body rejecting the ink a little. Someone above mentioned you may need to get a touch up. Thats not true, because the ink is already under the skin, it's just the residual scab that is coming off so the odds of your tattoo looking patchy are VERY slim. So enjoy! It doesn't peel for much longer than a week, and then you'll be looking just fabulous!

don't listen to the person who said oil... that causes your pores to close and break out thus destroying your tattoo. the smeared skin look is normal because your skin is not healed, you littlerally have a big scar on you right now that will not heal for another month. if your at the peeling stage, that means your tattoo is about 5 days old. if that is the case, you can use general dry skin lotion (nonscented) use that for the next week and the peeling stage will stop, you can use dry skin lotion as much as needed since by now the colors that were going to fall out have. if you have not had the tattoo for 5 days, continue using A and D oinment for it, a very small amount, just enough to cover the tattoo (only twice a day.) and when your tattoo is 5 days old switch over to dry skin lotion.

That is normal to happen. When i had got my first tat i thought the same thing. like what the. the colors orange yellow and green (leaves) were dark(faded looking) then after a week or so started to peel and look bright. Continue with the a&d ointment. the stripping will eventually stop, mines started to itch until i could feel the outline of the line. Thats what actually had me freakin out. it has nothin to do with the weather either cuz i had got mines in the summer

yes, that's normal...don't pick at it and don't pull the skin off of it. Just keep putting lotion on it to keep it moisturized. It's always interesting what different people say re: what to put on a tattoo and what not to. I was told not to use A&D but there seems to be alot of artists that still do. kinda interesting....congrats and hope u like your ink!
It's light because there are layers of skin peeling off...the tattoo will not be as dark as the initial tattoo when you first got it.

It's normal, just keep the A & D oitment on it daily...not a huge slathering of it, just a thin layer. If the tattoo artist got the color deep enough, the peeling won't effect it. Just let it fall off naturally though.

The peeling is normal and your artist should have told you about it. It's essentially the scab of the injury (the tattoo) peeling away.
The color difference is due to the depth of the color. It was "brighter" because there was ink in the scab. How it appears now is how color takes to the skin.

if the scabs come off too soon, you risk pulling the color back out of your skin. For the spot you got it, there's not too much you can do. Keep putting ointment on it, and take baths instead of showers - try to avoid getting it wet. Just do your best to follow the care instructions the artist gave you. You may have to go back after it heals and get some spots filled in, but most artists will do the touch up work for free.

yes it is normal for your tattoo to peel. it is healing. just make sure that it is not a thick chunk of skin that is peeling, that could cause discoloration to the art. if the skin that is peeling off really is a lighter color than your tattoo is that is a good thing because it means that only very thin layers of your skin is falling off.
