I absolutely think you can do it yourself and save yourself alot of money. You can go with silk or real flowerrs. If you go with real, I would suggest going through a wholesaler like Costco or Sam's Club. I bought my flowers through them and paid $12.99 per 2 dozen roses. The service was great and the flowers were gorgeous. I picked them up 3 days before the wedding and ordered them medium tight. I had plenty of time to arrange all the centerpieces and bought vases at Michaels for $3 each. For the church, I used pew cones from www.pewcones.com and filled them with the flowers. If you worked at a florist, you will have no trouble at all arranging the flowers. When I asked a florist how much she would charged for a similar centerpiece, she said $75 each and I spent under $20 each. The knot.com also has some great pictures and ideas. Hope this helps!

actually mothers day is may 13th, the 12th is a saturday.
I honestly think if its something you know you can pull off to look both beautifully and professionaly done, then go for it. It saves quite a bit of money in the long run. if you know everything you need great if not i could fire up my memory and let you know what you need, i used to make wedding bouquets.
For my aunts wedding which was put together in i think it was 4 months, i did the flowers ( 3 boutineers, and 7 bouquets, all table centerpieces {which were bouquets} all the flowers on the main table and the background of the main table) it took me 3 days non stop (by myself too) and costed in total, roughly 200.00 (because we used alot of roses). plus i cant remember the little extras. I also made the cake which was a hassel in itself lol. But everthing turned out amazing. Basically have fun with it and its your decision but i dont think its tacky at all.

I was apart of a couple of weddings where the bride did her own flowers. You of all people should be able to put something lovely and professional looking together because of your background.
Both weddings I was apart of had simple bouquets, however. One was callalillies and the other was just parchment paper roses.
They both used the pins that have the fake pearls on the end to hold in place, and OH!!! I just remembered, the rose bouquets were held together by clear hair rubber bands that you can get at the drugstore, with ribbon wrapped around the band so you couldn't see.
Both bouquets were really nice.

My mother used silk flowers for her wedding....they were very inexpensive and looked amazing! The great thing is, they last forever, unlike real flowers that you would have to have freeze dried (which end up slightly discolored and brittle sometimes).
However, if you go with real flowers, especially with your background, I would check out some local shops to see if they have any "second quality" flowers you can buy in bulk. They're MUCH cheaper, and the only thing wrong with them is a couple of discolored petals or bent leaves (which are, of course, easily removed).
I'm sure whatever you choose, they will be great - but I always think that everyone is so busy looking at how beautful the bride is, they won't notice if the flowers don't look "Martha Stewart" perfect! Enjoy your day!

I did bouquets of fake flowers. It was a lot cheaper than having some one else do real ones. I just bought them at the craft store. They were set up to lay in the crook of the arm. For the bouquet to be tossed, I found one already made up and then took off the plastic rings that held all the flowers together and added my own touch to it and wrapped it in ribbon. It all actually turned out really nice. It's a great budget saver.

I did my own floral arrangements for the reception centerpieces and I had a florist do a very "base model" bouquet for myself & maids and "added" some ivy and other flowers that were cheaper for me to buy and stick in.
I think with your experience it is plausible, just make sure you have a plan B if it doesn't turn out as you hope.

Do not buy into that florist crap. They charge an arm and a leg. Go through a bulk floral company - or get them from samsclub.com or costco.com. $1000 for 7 bouquets? Please! On growersbox.com you can get 6 1-dozen rose bouquets for $108. and they are fresh and beautiful. Don't do the silk flowers when you can get fresh ones at a much better price!

I am doing flowers for a June wedding and the bride has 7 bridesmaids. I am using silk flowers from Hobby Lobby and we purchased the flowers this week while they were 50% off for single stems. Total cost for 7 beautiful silk bouquets...$78.00.

Flowers might not seem it, but they're a big responsibility, is that really something you want to take on? You know your stuff, but maybe you could teach someone else and have them in charge of it? You're going to be way stressed on your wedding day, and flowers are the last thing you need to be doing that morning/afternoon.

If you have worked in a florist shop then you most likely have a pretty good grasp on how to do it. The quote you got was outlandish.
By all means, do it yourself.
Time was an issue for me in my wedding so we created silk bouquets.
