The DVD format stores the video and audio as separate streams. They are then recombined when the video is played back. This means that if the software you are using hasn't done a good job of splitting the video and audio then they will tend to go out of sync.

Unfortunately I cannot recommend any good programs. I tend to use Cyberlink PowerProducer myself but that's only because I found a free copy somewhere.

More than likely, these shows were coded with Xvid.

I read that restoring Xvid encoded files to MPEGs suitable for DVD burning is not a good way to go.

DivX, apparently, is able to retain the sync more effectively.

I have done this in the past. I use NeroVision Express too. I burned the DVD to a RW disk but then I load the VOB files into Womble MPEG Video Encoder and alter the Audio Shift so that the stream is in sync again. Womble allows for syncing in 10 millisecond steps from -2seconds to +2seconds.

Then I save the MPEG file to my hard disk and use that to burn a new DVD with TMPGEnc DVD Author.

It sounds very complicated but it's very straightforward.

True about the processor speed...faster is better. But ConvertXtoDVD is a very good programme. I've tried many others over the years but in my opinion this is the best. You can change the lip sync by 1/1000's of a second. Tip: to test if lip sync is OK, convert a small portion then copy the (vob) file and play it. This saves hours of conversion only to find the lip sync is out.
In my opinion, Nero is over rated.

Alternatively, contact me and I'll sell them to you lol...note to administrators---I'm just kidding!

yeh, i get that all the time, its just how they are recorded to save space, they can't always be perfect in conversions. I just pause it and start playing again, it usually corrects it or rewind for half a sec and play. It could be many reasons, didn't burn perfectly, dvd player can't read the disc properly......you got it for free, its not going to be perfect.

another possibility is that you need upto date codecs. Xvid, DivX, Ac3 Filter and Ac3 decompressor. get from www.free-codecs.com also if you use DVD santa you can offset the audio and video by how many seconds they are out and it will burn them in sync.

One possibility is that you have a slow processor on your computer and have other things running on your computer. This used to happen to me but it all changed when i upgraded to a faster computer. i.e. your processor can't cope with the rate of data it has to handle.
