My son's Dr. said she doesn't think he has autism because he will make eye contact, he responds to his name, and responds accordingly to the things we say to him. He does point with one finger...but now I'm a little concerned about the autism possibility again. Based on the info I've given what do you think? Should I have him evaluated?

Thanks for any information.

P.S. He can play peek-a-boo, clap his hands, wave, show you where your nose and hair is and he also knows where his hair is.

Sorry, didn't mean to scare you. Because of the things you just listed, especially using an index finger to point, I'm not concerned. I would have him evauated by the local early start program for speech, and if they had further concerns they would tell you. If you live in California you would call the local Regional Center to set up the free developmental and speech evaluation, but for any other state I would just call the local school district who should know who's in charge of Early Start services. Sounds like he's doing fine though. You may want to try teaching hima few signs. "More" is the easiest to teach and once they learn that they usually pick up on the other ones pretty fast. My 19 month old has several signs and can now say the actual word with them. It really helps language. You can look these signs up on-line. It gives them a way to communicate and lowers frustration. Some will tell you it delays language but that's not true. My daughter has 23 words and 5 signs, which is a 21 month old level of language. Good luck.

He still may have autism. I know a kid who has autism and he still responds to his name to things people say to him. He is actually very intelligent- but he DOES have autism. He is 13, but acts 5. A sign mite be a strange interest that he memorizes everything about. For example, the kid I know love power lines and memorizes what each powerline he sees looks like and counts them while he is going places or outside. You should get him evaluated though, just in case.

Everyone is very excited about austism these days. I went through 2 years of hell and took my son to every kind of therapy possible and guess what? He was just a late talker! There is such a thing! His hearing is fine, his blood work ups are fine, his teeth are fine, he's fine! Yippee!!

Both of my parents are m.d.'s and they said relax he's fine, he'll talk when he's ready. It's just a little delay, big deal, relax. They see my son all the time and said, "Girl, he's fine." But my stupid pediatrician has me convinced I needed to keep digging until we found a problem. Sorry, not one problem and we have a new pediatrician by the way.

There's so much politically correct crap working its way into the medical community its scary! On average a woman says 20,000 words a day. Men say 7,000. Hello? Men talk less, boys talk later, and if that makes me an insensitive parent then too bad. Boys talk less than girls and some talk later than girls.

All kids master skills at different rates, your son is going to be fine! Relax. Take it from me, it's not worth it. You didn't say it in this question, and yeah I know I'm not melissa, but I'm guessing your son is not talking yet. An expressive speech delay is not anything to get worked up about. I got worked up enough for both you and me! Relax, read to him and keep being an great mama.

There are different types of autism with different levels of function. A doctor can help you make that determination ask for a referral.

give him a little more time and if other signs appear then have him evaluated again. just because some one is a doctor does'nt mean his evaluation is correct
