I am in my mid-twenties and I am looking for a nice, affordable car that will get good gas mileage and is reliable over long distances. I would like it to be somewhat attractive also, but that is not my main concern. I am looking for something between $7,000 and $10,000.

Any ideas?

Honda Civic or Accord or Toyota Camry

How about a 'certified pre-owned' Honda or Toyota? It would be several years old, but if it's certified the car should still be in good shape and come with a limited warranty. Honda's and Toyotas are usually nice-looking cars with great gas mileage.

Get an OLD Civic. They are lighter and they made those cars with really great MPG. My 94 civic has 187K miles and runs like new. Just recently I measured it on the HWY to do 41 MPH. WOW !! And if I had to sell it - it would not get more than few thousand dollars. === The newer sub-compacts are that good. The new CIVICs are the size of old Accord. Just make sure you shop for good condition instead of looking at useless features (like fancy rims, etc.) Good Luck...

Kia Rio.

Kias have gotten alot better over the last several years. 38mpg, 100,000 mile warranty. And they sometimes go on sale for $7,995 - NEW!

I test drove one and it was smooth and quiet. Bought a Hyundai Tiburon though because it looked way better ;) Kia Rios aren't the prettiest cars around, but they're definitely a lot of bang for the buck.

Look for a 2005 or 2006 Chevrolet Aveo. You should be able to get one in your price range. The EPA highway milage figure is 32 mpg.

A decent used toyota camry, honda accord, subaru impreza or legacy or a nissan maxima can all be had for that price and will be fuel-efficient and require very little maintenance.
