I'm no interior decorator, but I have been decorating my own house for the past couple years.
1. Find colors that fit your mood for the room (Earth- reds, yellows, golds, Water- Blues/Greens and of course Neutrals- Creams, Coffees, Nuts( pistachio, almond)
2. We all want space, no clutter, so you might want to try using shelves, organizers, closets but that blend with the room's atmosphere.
3. Also, you might want to try a theme, like (Tropical Scene, Mountain Cabin, South Western/Native, or anything that you like to do make a theme out of it. Like if you are a snowboarder, make that as your them. Music, Theatre, anything.
4. Be creative, and you don't have to spend a whole lot of money. Garage Sales, Arc and Salvation Army sells alot of antiques, Flea Markets. Really bargain. And when you get home with these items, re-create them, fresh paint, stain, ad flowers, stencils, you can really have alot of fun with this once you get started.
I have an Associate Degree in Graphic Design, but I've always had a love for Home Improvements and Decorating.
Last summer my husband and I built a 30 ft. waterfall/pond that hold 210 gallons of water in our .25 acre backyard. And I know nothing about landscape!
Most importantly use your imagination, and when it gets overwhelming, take breaks, alot of them if needed.
Hope that helps.

well this is a verry open ended question as it all depends on what room and what your style is. for example myself and my best friend love the same colors but she is more country than i am. we both inadverntaly painted our living rooms the same colors and used the same color scheme and came out with completely different looks i like hers as is it the colors that i like but i am not into cowboys and horses type deal. so what i would do is take a good look at what you really like and what sais more about you. if it is your bed room i am a fan of dark as i sleep better when it is black. and for a kitchen i love bright and airy as it makes it seem more clean. as for getting ideas go to aq local hardware store and they will have a ton of mags of interoir designs
