I had this same problem. My room was a royal purple on the walls. The ceiling was empire yellow. You should prime your room first. If the walls are as dark as mine you might want to paint two or three coats of primer (preferably white) before you paint it any light color.

First paint it with primer (it's white). This might take a couple of coats if the purple is really dark. Then you paint over the primer with the color of choice.

primer, primer and more primer.... red paint??? even more primer. black even more
:-) i have had to paint black walls white... all i can say is i used alot of primer... when you go to the paint store and just ask for a primer for a light brown tan
