So far this week I've trapped 6 cats roaming free in the neighborhood and turned them in to authorities to protect the natural fauna around my property. The neighbors have all been sent prior notices about the trapping and are fully aware of where their cats can be recovered. I've been using canned cat food as bait for the trap. Would tuna or salmon be more effective or about the same?

Apparently these cat lovers that think I'm being mean and hope the neighbors will report me don't have many living brain cells... first of all.. it is COMPLETELY legal. The neighbors are in the legal wrong by leaving the cats out. I got the traps from the humane society, and return the cats to the humane society.
And BTW... the current temperature here is 6F and feels like -9F with wind chill... when the traps are set I check them very frequently (I can actually usually hear it go off anyway... and then the cats are brought into a warm room and provided food and water until they are taken to the authorities.

If anything I should be reporting them. So SHUT IT.

Hey. I have had to do the same thing. We had a cat problem too. Stick with the cat food. It will last longer than fish. But you can get fish flavors that smell stronger. We used wet cat food and caught the cats the fastest. If you just want to test it out though mix a bit of tuna into the wet cat food to add scent. But for the msot part wet cat food works really well.

Tuna would probably be more effective. Canned cat food is engineered for nutrition. Tuna just tastes good. And I've never seen a cat goes as nuts for a can of cat food the way they do a can of tuna.

It's important to note, if you are catching feral cats, that more feral cats will just move in and take their place. You'll be stuck in a never ending cycle. A more effective way, is to trap, neuter and release. That way, they won't make more cats, but they'll keep other strays out of their (your) territory.

No!! Use canned puppy nutrition. food market canned puppy nutrition has style enzymes in it that make pets bypass bonkers whilst they consume it. Then the puppy proprietor will see the puppy working to the nutrition after it particularly is meant to think of "wow which could be stable puppy nutrition" (it is not stable puppy nutrition via how - it extremely is basically a synthetic chemical they upload to it that makes pets act like that). yet using fact the animal actual has to style the nutrition so as to associate the flavour enzymes with the particular smell, if i had to bait raccoons, i might probable first go away a pair of open cans out in the woods (so as that they get addicted, then choose for the bait). Black bears bypass loopy over canned puppy nutrition via how - so don't be shocked if ... y'be responsive to.

I'd still stick with the canned food.. It has a stronger smell. I have a cat trap set up to catch ferrell cats and so far the canned food has worked the best. I have tried using dry food, left overs, cooked meats and fish, but the canned food seems to attract them better.

The natural "fauna" around your property is hardly likely to suffer any damage from cats.

More prone to suffer from non-indigenous plant species choking them out and pollutants from ground water and air contanimation.

Hope your neighbours report you for trapping their pets.

You need a hobby. Try knitting. Reported to be calming.

I trap cats to get them spay/neutered and their vaccinations. I would not give you any advice if you paid me too.
You will end up with many enemies.
