It depends on the branch of service and weather its visible while in uniform. If its on his wrist then he may be alright he might just have to were his sleeves down all the time and were long sleeve dress uniform (not full service).

Also if its on his wrist it cant cover 25% of a exposed body part.

The Army recently changed their rules on tattoos. Any tattoos on skin that is exposed while in uniform (basically the back of the neck and hands) used to be against the rules, but they are now allowed. There are still regulations (they can't be offensive or vulgar for one), but I don't remember exactly what they are. He needs to talk to his chain of command and find out if his tattoo is going to be a problem.

They can't force the removal of the tattoo, but it may affect his ability to stay in the military, depending on the design, placement, size, and how his command feels about the tattoo.

They can't make him remove it, but they can kick him out for it. The military has policies in place regarding tattooing and body piercing, and one of them states that you will NOT get tattoos while in the service. The Reserves may be different, so I think it would be a good idea for your "friend" to check with his unit and see.

All I can tell you is my ex husband is an E7 in the Army and this year will mark his 20 years in service. While in service he has gotten 3 tattoo's. 1 on each of his arms, and one on his chest.

If you can see them with the duty uniform on they will make him remove. If they see it with a pt uniform on your good. Big part is if you see it with the combat uniform on. That is in the UCMJ 670-1 if you want to know anymore, and I know there is another policy on it dont know what the code is though.

They can't make him remove it unless they are going to pay for it. They can however kick him out for it or give him other disciplinary actions. For example extra duty or dock his pay. He is really stupid for doing this. He also won't get promoted as quickly now because things like this go on your record and subtract promotion points.
