That is kind of an open ended question. As an educator in a low income environment I face this issue often. There are four kinds of abuse we look for physical, emotional, sexual and then there is neglect. Physical is obviously just it sounds, you might notice bruising, cuts, frequent injuries that have stories that do not make sense. Often they are in areas you can't see but with younger children they really aren't good at hiding it, for example one child told me their back was really itchy, I sent them to the office to get checked in case it was a rash, I came to find out it was wounds healing. Another child told me that his mom's boyfriend was holding is baby brother and yelling at it using the F*word. Showing me it was at arms length. That was considered physical abuse for an investigation and emotional because of the affects it was having on the sibling. Sexual abuse is harder to detect though in my school we did experience one where a young girl was bleeding and informed her teacher of it. After investigating she was being sexual abused by her brothers and cousins who shared a room with her. It had been happening for so long she truly did not believe what was happening was wrong. We deal with issues of neglect like when parents do not pick their children up from school and leave them for extended hours or wen they are consistently late for school with out reason. Below I have put a resource for the state of Ohio, there are many resources out their that you can turn to if this something that you or someone you know needs help with. It is a scary experience but there are a lot of people out there that are willing to help and protect these victims. The child's school is a good place to start. They can help lead you in the right direction for your area.

Child abuse consists of any act, or failure to act, that endangers a child's physical or emotional health and development. Someone is abusive if he or she fails to nurture the child, physically injures the child, or relates sexually to the child.

There are different types of abuse to me. There is neglecting your childs needs....ie not changing a wet or dirty diaper in a timely fashion, not giving them attention, ignoring them, things of that sort....then there is physical, hitting them for every little thing, using belts ect, leaving welts, marks, bruises.....i have heard of a case awhile back, i believe it was foster parents, who made the children go into cages when they were "bad" that is big time child abuse....i think there are a lot of types though. People shouldn't forget about neglect though. I see so many children who are dirty, appear hungry, ignored, wet diapers hanging to their knees...to me this is just as bad as striking a child if not worse in some cases.
