I've just been wondering this for quite some time now...

If you are driving in the fast lane and a cop pulls out behind you and signals for you to pull over, should you pull all the way over to the right shoulder or just pull over to the left shoulder?

I have never been pulled over, but I tend to drive in the fast lane on my way back from work, as my exit is a left hand exit and it's hard to get over from one side of the highway to the other. So if I ever get pulled over, I'd like to know the proper etiquette.

Make your way safely over to the right shoulder. You will put yourself and the officer in real danger by pulling off to the left.

I agree with the others who suggest you should exit the freeway completely, going to a side street where it is much safer.

Too many cars have been rear-ended and cops killed or injured by out-of-control (i.e. drunk) drivers who slam into a parked police car on the side of the road. Even when the cop is standing on the passenger's side of the car, they can get killed or injured. It is best to leave the highway, using your turn signals to indicate your intentions.

Proper etiquette says you need to exit at the next exit ramp and get to a parking lot. Make sure that you put your signal lights on so the officer knows what you are doing. That way when the officer gets out their is no danger of he or she getting hit by another car.

It's best if you can exit the freeway and pullover on a side street.

If not, then pull over on the right shoulder. The left shoulder is strictly for emergencies.

Wherever there is a good place. Just make sure to signal and give the cop room to follow you over. And no donut jokes.

Go right. The cop will block traffic and make it safe to do so.
