why would you want to give people the already bad idea that Pits should be banned? Its things like this that make people hate the breed. You should not own a dog like this if you are trying to "make" it bark and be mean.

Don't!!!
Pits are already under attack by the animal rightists and are about to be outlawed in way to many places. If this craziness doesn't stop and they continue to convince people that entire breeds should be banned the populous will think maybe entire groups of people should be banned in the next decade. The situation is very dangerous as far as a political movement. Humans never seem to learn and WW11 seems to have taught us nothing! Join Pet-Law and you will start to understand why it would not be a good idea for your dog to be taught to act more aggressive. Your doing the entire breed an injustice simply by announcing that you want to make her scarier than she already is just because of her shape. For all we know she is a docile loving and even submissive dog. If you wanted to threaten people maybe you should just gotten a sign that said your property was off limits and armed with a gun rather than a dog.

Do not train her to do this. It is a very bad idea. If you train a dog to bark at people at your house, she will do it everywhere else as well. Dogs are Usually protective animals anyways. Instint will kick in eventually and she will bark if someone comes to your house, but then she will settle down after you tell her that its ok. If you train her to do it, she may think its ok all the time.

I think this just comes natural to this breed. What you might want to consider, however, is how to socialize the animal so that the wrong people aren't adversely affected by being bitten or mauled.
This is a beautiful breed and with a loving environment and a well-informed Alpha-Owner, you can look forward to a wonderful relationship with this animal. She will naturally be quite protective, but I can't emphasize enough that you, as the owner, need to educate yourself and become the "Alpha" dog in the household. If you don't, the dog will give you many problems as far as her discipline and behaviors you don't like.
(I once was bitten by a dog whose owner never bothered to socialize the animal nor was she the "alpha" in the household.)
You want this dog to behave well and protect your environment, not to cause all kinds of lawsuits. The breed is much maligned, but I've had pitts sit on my lap with paws on my shoulders while they slobber-kissed my face.
What any household animal needs most is: walking, immediate recognition of their owner being the "Alpha" dog, and of course, lots of loving. But you be the boss, please.

Enjoy your animal.

I have a two year old pit and I thought she would never be protective of the house. Its not something that you can really train into a dog. Once she grew up and started to understand more she began to be more protective. You have to have a close bond with a dog in order for them to want to protect you. Be patient with your puppy and just let her grow up. Once she matures she will want to protect you and bark at strangers. PS Don't work to hard to get her to bark at people or else you will create a mean Pit. Please don't be one of "THOSE" pit bull owners.

What a way to make the American Pit Bull Terrier look bad!! It is owners like you that make them look bad. She will bark if she find the need for it. I never trained my Rottweiler mix, and she lets us know when someone is around she barks 2-3 times and we come out then she stops and goes back to what she was doing. You train your dog to do that and you are sentencing her to death because of her breed. You don't need an APBT..

I hope you did not adopt a dog just so she can be an intimidating guard dog. In my opinion, dogs deserve a better life than that. Where I live, many cities are in the process of banning pitbulls because too many people have trained them in this way. Don't prove the anti-pitbull people right.

With pitbulls, you don't have to train them to be protective. It comes naturally with them providing you have a strong bond with them. But like e1 else said, you have to give her tons of love and tons more socialization along with proper training or she could very well turn on you later down the road. My lab/pit mix may look like a lab but he's pure pit inside. Was never socialized, been abused, and never allowed to exercise when his former owners had him. Now, after 2 yrs. of extensive training, socialization, and love, he's a very lovable dog who would rather slobber all over ya then bite you. Still, since the bond between us is so strong, he is very protective of my daughter and I but I will never give him the opportunity to attack anyone. I make sure he knows that ppl that I introduce him to are friends and can be trusted, other ppl he knows to watch very closely.

So you just bought a baby pitbull for the wrong reasons. Poor dog! Her fate is doomed.

Don't you realize that when people do this to their dogs, they are actually signing thier death certificate.

You know how many pitbulls are euthenized and how many end up in rescues across the country because of people like you?

Just owning a pitbull is enough to scare a stranger away! Don't make her a dangerous one. Socialize her with people, children and other dogs!!! I can't stress that enough.

Find a pitbull rescue and ask them your question.

I really hope you did not get a pitbull just so you could have a "mean, or scary" dog. If you truly want your dog to be protective of you and your home all you have to do is simply love her and give her plenty of affection and attention and of course, proper training!!! When she feels something is really not right or when someone is threatening you, she will protect you in her own way. Please do not be one of those owners who help give this wonderful breed a bad reputation.
