the litter box is already covered it looks like a small kennel and i have a rug in front of it but my cat is crazy and digs into it with force so it comes shooting out of the box so it goes on the floor and on the rug i have. how can i keep him from doing that or what i can use to prevent that since I doubt i can make him stop? it trails all over the kitchen and requires me to sweep it up twice a day.

You can't. I gave up years ago. The first thing I would do is take it out of your kitchen. Kitchens are not good places for anyone or anything to be going to the bathroom. Try a closet, bathroom, or hall. One thing that has worked best for me is turn the opening of the litter box to the wall and only about a foot or so from the wall, Cats can squeeze into small spaces but try not to go lower than a foot. This way, all the litter will fall onto your rug. You said that you have a covered box, my question is is it one of the rectangular ones or the igloo looking ones? I've used both, I like the igloo one because the opening is smaller, so and because of the positioning of the litter part. The opening is in front of a little ramp of stairs with the litter part to the side. That way when my cat is doing his litter throwing act, he is only throwing it onto the covered stairs and into the walls. Of course some litter still gets out, but its significantly different. If it is possible in your living arrangements, give him an area that is rarely used by you as his bathroom. Overall, just get creative and try what works for you. He won't stop, its not about the box being too dirty, or him not liking the litter, its about his inate desire to dig, bury, and play. To him its not only a bathroom, its a playground. Good luck to you and your baby!

I will suggest using a bath mat you can get a walmart that looks like a sea creature (little rubber things standing up) it catches the litter as it falls out of box. I would take it out of the kitchen too. This rug also helps when the litter gets stuck between their toes. Also Feline Pine works great but for a cheaper Version just buy the wood pellets for a wood pellet stove. They are the same thing and is only around $5. for a 50lb sack. But when using the pellets mix it with litter for the first few litter changes cuz your cat may not like the feel right away and if you mix it and gradually get rid of the litter each change he/she will get used to it. The pellets just turn to saw dust when they get wet so it is great and works wonders with the smell!!!!!!!!!

It's normal, all cats do this. My cats cover there poop so that there area doesn't smell. i cant reall tell you what to do but I put a rug underneath mine. Try not to put so much litter in it, that could be it too. if u have a basement i would put the litter box down there so if he trails it any where it would be in a basement. thats what i do. anyway i hope that this helped you and im really sorry for this if i didn't help.

There are mats that are made for this purpose. Some are made of rubber, some of plastic. They have grooves in them that trap the litter as your cat gets out of the box. I have seen them in pet stores. They come in different sizes and prices. I used to have those in my house when I had 6 cats. They worked pretty well too. I didn't buy mine in a pet store tho. I remember I bought them from a mail order place. You might try Lillian Vernon, I think that is where I have seen them. Hope this helps!

We use Feline Pine which is quite large and turns to dust as the cat uses the litter box so there is only a bit of dust on the floor and a few pieces of litter

My cat's box has a little swinging door at the entrance that prevents a lot of the litter from going out. you can also buy a bathmat for under the box. That will be easier to clean.

make sure you have a litter box with high sides and some of them even have a plastic flap over the doorway so that might keep it from spraying the litter if your cat will still go in it

There is a kind of litter box with hole in the top. My friend has one and she loves it. They can kick all they want and nothing happens. I have a dome one with a matt made to catch litter and it works well. Just don't over fill it.

I have the same problem and really liked fairgirls suggestion. I pulled up the website to view, the very different litter box, and I'm going to buy one.
