I am single. I filed with NY as a non-resident. I calculated my taxes with Turbo Tax and it says I am to receive a refund from NY and owe to NJ. Do I need to file both a NJ tax return and a NY? Thanks. The tax software is only allowing me to file one.

you need to file a NJ 1040 since youre a resident of NJ and a NY IT-203 for non-residents since you earned income in NY.

you will receive a credit on your home state return (NJ) for taxes you paid to other jurisdictions (NY) so you dont end up paying tax on your wages to two places

Yes.

Turbo Tax will allow you to file multiple state returns BUT you will need to buy the NJ return from Turbo Tax. TT will then properly handle the credit to your NJ taxes for the NY taxes paid. This will reduce or eliminate your NJ tax liability.

you ought to document a go back for each state. You get a credit in NJ. The credit is the decrease of A) the quantity you actually had to pay ny (no longer the quantity withheld, notwithstanding the quantity of tax due.) B) the quantity of taxes NJ assesses on the ny income. you gained't get funds back from NJ of the taxes paid to ny. NJ has a property tax credit so that you'll get that from New Jersey.

You will file the tax in the state that you worked in because thats where your employer is and thats the state you paid your tax to and as a matter of fact, your w-2 form will be posted to you from the employer in the state where you worked,
