Your activity should be progressive and comfortable -
For example , if you choose swimming , and can do a 1/2 hour when you start , do that for a week . Then increase it by 15 minutes the next week.
As your stamina increases, you will be able to add more time to your activity and develop more muscle.
You will not be very hungry right after a work out , but start preparing food for when your system stabilizes.
Grill poultry, fish and lean meats. Frozen veggies are actually very healthy and easy . . . just microwave the pound bag of corn , peas, carrots or green beans and add some sauce if you like for example the Marsala curry is good or salsa if you like that. Baked potatoes with salsa are also good.
Also eat beans (cooked with some vinegar to eliminate bloating).
Eat as much as you feel comfortable with , although eating in the evening is a challenge for your system if you will be laying in bed soon.
Just keep upping your activity (choose one you like or else you will not hang with it) and upping that good food.
Good luck.
PS: you should feel tired afterward but not in pain ,
Pain is natures way of telling you , you went too far over the top , natures alarm system it is.

I usually workout 2-3 times a week, for at least 45-60 minutes, once every other day. Get protein either through food such as peanut butter, or with a supplement. A lot of people at my gym use Creatine to help muscle development.

Work out early in the morning, 6:00am. 1 time a day, about 2-4 times a week. Work outs should last about 25-30 minutes. You should feel tired before, and good and refreshed, sweaty after. Eat a HEARTY breakfast after the work out. It feels soooo good.
