yes it is possible to come out of these catatonic phases, a friend of mine was serving with me in Iraq and was in a similar situation. He was catatonic for about two weeks once he got to bethesda. He is now fine and living in Arizona. Good luck to you and your fiance. and thank him for serving

Fear not! Many times when people are injured severely the doctors will put them into a coma so they won't injure themselves more by pulling on tubes and machinery connected to them. This is done to keep them stable on a more gentle phrase. Comas can be completely medically induced on purpose. They don't want them thrashing around in pain and pulling something loose. The doctors want them calm. Basically, they want their entire body to operate at as low a level as it possibly can so it can heal faster while being injected with antibiotics and other forms of medicines or just to hold a body part very still. I saw this personally once on someone suffering from a gun shot wound. His body swelled up to twice it's normal size. There were tubes and breathing machines and it seemed a little bit of everything in the room with him while he slept in a coma recovering. Within 3 months or so they were able to bring him out of the medically induced coma. The infection that had filled his body was gone and he was a normal looking person again. Handsome and whole, almost like new just with some scaring from the wound. Modern medicine is fascinating now days with what they can do. Pray for his recovery. Pray hard. He needs someone with him to talk to him even when it looks like they can't understand; many times they hear you when you speak to them.

When injuries are severe, especially brain injuries, doctors will often induce a coma by administering drugs. This allows the body to heal and saves the patient from the worst of the pain. Induced coma can also be used to bring down swelling of the brain. Once they stop administrating the drugs your boyfriend will wake up as normal.

Well, I've seen it come and go. I'd be interested to see what others say. It felt like
I just woke up after a few days. Doubtful if
if entirely a similar situation, but about a week is gone for me.
