I have black hair as well, but I'd never dye it, because I'm not sure I'd get the color back to where it was before...Mines more of a REALLY dark brown mixed with black.

But if you're going for a suble complete new color, then probably a medium brown, or a darker brown, or you could just get highlights. Nothing drastic though, those kinds of things don't really ever turn out to look easy on the eyes.

I happen to think natural, shiny black hair on it's own is pretty, and a bit unique as many people with this haircolor often lighten it to a different shade. If you really want to change the color though I would definitely keep your hair fairly dark. I wouldn't go lighter than say, a chocolate brown. Remember, the lighter you want to go, the more bleach and damage is involved.

Is your hair naturally black? or did you dye it black? I died my hair black and had to get it stripped before I could dye it any other color. I LOVED my hair black and so did my fiance, but I had to die it once a month to keep up with my roots and it was not good for my hair. I think Black is HOT!

If you're doing it at home, the only color that you're probably going to be able to pull off is a red shade. Browns or blondes aren't going to work very well or if they do, they'll look a little odd. If you're wanting to go light, you'll need to get it professionally done if you want it to look like it was done right.
I tried going blonde on dark brown and it ended up a really weird spotty, red-like shade. Pretty much I ended up looking like a strange zebra.

You can probably only do like a dark brown or a dark red because you cannot lift dark hair (especially black) with color. If you want anything lighter than that, you will need to bleach it or go get it bleached by a professional to have it dyed.

It depends on your skin color, if its tan then red or maybe brown with blond highlights. But red goes with all skin colors.

It depends on your complexion if you can get away with lighter. You should go to a salon and get it done professionally. Auburn red may be a good option if it goes with your skin.
