in case you wonder why I've only been getting 1 or 2, I have a colicky baby, but a change in formula seems to be working... so why am I so much more tired today?

hey just some suggestions for the colic. Keep his/her head covered. ALL THE TIME. I hate to see small infants without something over them to keep air out their face. The funniest things calm babies. Try the vacuum cleaner...anything that has a vibration or humming sound to it seems to work. Some doctors say that White Noise is soothing to a baby to because it sounds like the womb

It sounds like you're used to get small amounts of sleep as opposed to 6 or more hours. Six to eight full hours of sleep is what is medically recommended for people to be or stay healthy. If you're used to getting much less, your body is in tune with that. Now that you've gotten six, your body's sleep schedule is off and this causes - most commonly - the continued feeling of tiredness.

Ah, now I've read the part about the baby. Try your best (I understand you don't have much control over it) to get to bed at the same time every night and up at the same time in the morning. It is very important for all of your bodily systems that your sleep schedule be as consistent as possible. Whether you can only get 4 hours or 8, keeping it within the same time periods will do wonders for how you feel after waking up.

Continued changes in your sleep schedule could lead to depression, lowered immunity, changes in menstrual cycle, memory loss, weight gain, etc. So again, it's important for you to try to be as consistent as possible. Hopefully the new formula will continue to work for your baby and give you the best chance of fixing your sleep schedule!

Good luck!

Congratulations on the baby, get used to being tired alot, you suffer with sleep deprivation, and six hours isn't going to make up for what you have already missed out on. You can't catch up on sleep, the body doesn't work that way. When you get only an hour or two at a time, you aren't getting REM sleep, you aren't relaxing into deep alpha wave sleep, and so don't always feel fatigued because you are running on adrenaline. That WILL catch up with you in the long run. When you can sleep eight to ten hours, you will start feeling refreshed on waking.
