I just got back all 4 w2 forms from 2006. I received unemployment , for about 6 months then I worked at the mall for 4 months and on that w2 form it shows federal income tax with held to be 100 $, then I worked at Target part time for about a little over a month in a half and it shows federal income tax .07 cents and now at my current job it shows federal income tax withheld 0 $. I called my boss and asked why and he checked to see how many I claimed and he said I claimed 5 which I never would have the form must of either gotten filled out wrong or a mis print. So my question is will I owe back taxes? I have a 5 yr old daughter and I am married but we didn't live together for 11 months last year.So will I owe taxes or get a refund as usual?

Unfortunately there's no way to tell from the information provided. It depends upon your total income, filing status and whether or not you're eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

You said that you lived apart for 11 months last year but didn't way which 11 months. To file as Head of Household (while still married) you must have lived apart of ALL of the last half of 2006 and have a qualifying child living with you. Maybe you meet that and maybe you don't; it's not possible to say from the information you provided.

If your employer withheld taxes based on 5 exemptions, YOU would have had to have filed your W4 that way. If you fail to file a W4 with your employer they will withhold as if you had filed Single and 0.

The only way to find that answer is to prepare your tax return. You can't do anything about the 2006 witholding now.
Change your tax witholding for this year.
If you did not live with your spouse at anytime during the last 6 months of 2006, you may be able to file as Head of Household, and may get Earned Income Credit. Check the rules to see if you qualify.

Given your employment history, it is unlikely that you will owe any taxes that you haven't already paid in, but the amount of debt or refund will likely be quite small. Are you sure you even made enough money during the year to have to file?
At any rate, just do your taxes as usual and see how it ends up. Knowing in advance won't change anything.

Yes they will most likely deduct what you owe from your refund. And yes, that will delay your getting the rest of your refund, since it can't just flow through the system without interruption.

not enough info to answer!

However, if you were married as of 12/31/2006 make sure you file MFJ or MFS. DON'T file as single or HoH. That is illegal.

See www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc353.html - that indicates how you must file as married

depends on the total amount you earned and the total amount withheld.

If you didn't have enough withheld, not only will you have to pay it by April 15, but you may owe a penalty for not withholding it.
