I have never owned a Pom, but I have trained some of them. Thet tend to be a little snapish if they are handled too roughly and if they are not properly sociolized.

Take a professinal with you to evaluate which pup will match with your family.

I would say her children are old enough to know how to properly treat an animal. As a general rule, small dogs and small children don't mix well, since young ones can be too rough, and when a dog reacts, it does so by biting, and that leads to more problems. They are a hyper breed of dog, very busy all the time, and are a high maintenance breed with their constant grooming needs, but other than that, they are like any other dog, properly trained they will make a good pet

I have been around quite a few and most were wonderful with kids. I had one that I got when I was only 8, and he was fine with me and my little brother, and the one I have now is wonderful with my six kids(aged 2 to 15). BUT some Poms are "one person" dogs, and do get snippy. Be sure to go to a good breeder, see the parents(most good breeders won't own the father, but will own several other relatives). Also, do not allow the kids to pick on the dog, and let them do some of the care(feeding, walking) that will help the dog bond to them. Be careful, and do some research, but this breed is normally good with kids.

I have had expererience with pomeranians and though they are very cute and cuddly they are not very good with children. They can be very snippy and quite fragile, for children you should consider a more sterdy, tolerant dog. As toilet training pomeranians they can be easy to housebreak or they can be stubborn and difficult it most likely depends on the dog, but they are known sometimes for stubborness.

I am the oldest of 4 kids, we grew up with a Pomeranian in the house. I have to tell you, our first Pom was the best dog any of us have ever owned! We loved him so much, that when he passed on, in time we got another Pom. The second, had a spoiled brat personality (from birth I think) , but, we loved him too!! Dino, (the brat) once or twice did try to snarl & show his teeth, but neither one ever bit anyone. Both practically house trained themselves. Poms are very smart dogs, & can be great with children- I wouldnt have traded ours for any other !!

Poms are great and no harder to train than any other breed. I was told that my Sheltie would bite my kids because she was a "snippy" breed --- BS, she was fantastic with the kids till the day she died. Tell your friend to have the kids show tolerance and love and don't 'jump' up too fast until the new baby gets used to everybody.

I have one, but I don'y have small children. My puppy is 11 mos old and vEEEEErrrrryyyyy active. My granddaughters come from time to time to visit me and he really gets excited, but he gets like that whith everyone no matter age. Al he wants to do is get all the attention, he really thinks he is the center of the universe. But they are so pretty, funny and lovable that it is worth it. Anyway, I think they would do better with children over 10 years, most of small breeds are like that. Ando, no they are not difficult to toilet train.

14 and 5 yrs they are old enough not to torment and tease the pom, most small toy breeds will nip children and adults if they are messed around too much there is only so much they will put up with, ie if the 5 yr old is a girl and she takes to grooming and dressing and trying to put the pom in a pram or putting ribbons on , the pom will not put up with it

No toy breed is ideal with children. It's not that they're nasty, more a case of children being crafty and hurting them behind your back. I refuse to sell toy breeds to homes with children under 12 years old.
