It happened yesterday to my wife, who I had never seen crying before for physical pain, not even for kidney stones or when she broke her ankle.
For this reason I first though that she was jocking and I made fun of her, saying that crying is not needed for such a small thing.
Then I realized she was crying in earnest. In fact her toe was broken.
Anyway I wonder: how is possible that such a small thing could hurt so much to reduce to tears a mature woman (my wife is 41) who have never shed a single tears in her life because of physical pain? (at least since we met, 20 years ago)

Have you ever experienced something similar?

You cannot believe how badly broken toes hurt until you've had them. It seems ridiculous that something so small could hurt so bad but it's true. They take forever to heal too, the big toe is the absolute worst because every step you take requires weight on the big toe, I was unable to walk without a crutch or wear shoes at all for the first week when I broke the big toe. I've broken the small toe twice too - same foot and that hurt a lot too, but nothing like the big toe. And although I've never had kidney stones, I've given birth naturally and handled that without tears.

I dropped a trash can on my toe a couple months ago. I sat down and had tears in my eyes and could not talk for a few minutes. I'm no wuss when it comes to pain, either. I've had 23 hours of labor with my daughter, cancer surgery on the bone in my thigh, shattered my right wrist, and had gallbladder surgery. My entire toenail is still purple, and it's still pretty sensitive. I didn't even break mine like your wife, so I'd say -- heck, yeah! It hurts like crazy!

I hope she heals fast and feels better soon!

Yes!! I stubbed my toe about a month ago on a piece of wood and it was extreemly painful. I usually have a pretty high tolerance for physical pain as well but I must've done a good job this time because it's turning blue. Yuck!

Hell, yes! Just last winter I smashed my big toe on the side of a transmission that was on my kitchen floor. My toe nail came off and it bled all over the damn house. It hurt so bad I crapped my pants and cried like a girl! My eyes are watering just remembering it!

I hate pain so when I stubbed my toe I cried and thought I dislocated it but I believe it was fine.

Different things hurt in different ways and hit different nerves, so maybe that is the reason in your wife's case.

I hear you man. That has happened to me a couple of times and I can almost cry just thinking about it. One time it happened to me in the middle of the night and my middle toe turned black and blue for a month.

Absolutely...it can be a terrible pain!! I knew a lady who required surgery to her foot for stubbing her toe on a desk.

I hope you apologized for laughing.

I cried last week because my hubby left the vacuum cleaner out and i tripped over the wire, it could have something to do with anger because I cry when I'm angry instead of lashing out.

yes, broke my big toe, 25 years ago, cross-country skiing. After all that time, when my feet get cold that toe always freezes first.
