first lesson in angling keep it simple, don't make it to complicated. i catch a lot of decent sized carp in the margins with a piece of macaroni cheese on a size 10 drennan super specialist barbless hook to a 6lbs line with a small waggler float.a handful of sweetcorn around the float now & again keeps them interested, other hook baits i use are sweetcorn, luncheon meat, pieces of hot dog sausages, bread ,cat meat.a good summer method is floating crust or a large piece of bread flake fished on the top.ask yourself are all the modern designer baits designed to catch the fish or the angler.

There is no "best bait" for carp, and how you present it depends upon the circumstances of the day and the water. Welcome to the wonderful world of angling, that is the joy of it, a challenge that constantly changes with no one solution that will fit the bill from hour to hour! Just try to learn as many techniques as you can, take advice but treat it with the scepticism it deserves unless you know the source of the advice to be good. Beg or borrow magazines, they contain up to date information, and try to join a club, preferably with a coach, to help you. Fishing against or watching local match anglers will help you, they are great innovators of new technique and baits, and don't be afraid to experiment yourself, just think how the fish would react to what you're doing. Good luck

pay no notice to the previous poster as carp do not always feed on the bottom, in the summer months they will often be found basking in the sun and feeding on the surface. it really does depend on conditions how to present bait, but anything that is colourful and smells noice to a fish works well. i know my dad who posts on the above link has tried things like bananas for carp, try out luncheon meat, cat food, sweet corn and carp pellets (do not use trout pellets)

dont listen to ridgerunner he is american and wants to kill carp, over here we respect thes wonderful fish.

Wheatie balls. One box of Wheaties, one small jar of Strawberry jelly, one teaspoon of vanilla flavoring. Mix, crush and mash until you get a consistency of dry concrete. Then, mash a ball around your hook, and place your hand, ball and hook into the water, squeezing. remove, and continue to form until the outside of the ball gets stickly.
You can make these in advance, leave them out to dry a bit, and then thread hook into.
The very best is the mixture above, with a little transmission fluid added. But this very dangerous to wildlife, and is probably illegal.
But hell, they are carp.
Now, a fish fish finding rig. This consists of a leader, say 2 feet, tied to a large swivel. Above this is an egg weight. This weight is on your fishing line, which is tied to the other end of the swivel.
The size of the weight and the length of the leader will depend on the current, and what the fish depth is.
