What sort of pepper? Black pepper or "hot" pepper?

Black peppers have piperine, which is known for some medicinal uses and insecticidal uses. It can also inhibit drug metabolism.

Hot peppers have a rather interesting component called capsaicin that is used in some pain-relieving ointments (Bengay, that sort of thing) and is supposed to be anti-carconigenic, at least for lung and prostate cancer. It might also have beneficial uses for treating diabetes.

The spiciness of hot peppers (or chiles) is determined by the concentration of capsaicin in the pepper. The higher the concentration, the spicier the pepper.

Black pepper is produced from the still-green unripe berries of the pepper plant.
