I'm a biiiig advocate of do you have the space, time, patience, etc,for a puppy for example: I would looooooove a puppy, but i have an apartment sized home (is that enough space for a puppy?, and no back yard, is that fair fr a puppy?); how many hours do spend at home? will the puppy get bored? how do you intend o pay for vet bills?

If all of these ? and more you can answer fairly look @ how much space you have, do you have a yard? more importantly, how long of walks will you be able to take your dog on? small dogs (to breeds such as pugs, pomeranians, poodles etc.) need about 2 half hour walks per day..... larger breeds labs, sheapards etc. need hour long walks twice a day... are you able to take them on these walks... and this needs to happen whether or not you have a yard. how much can you afford to spend on food? where will you take your dog to the vet? before you even think about what kind of breed you want do a looooooooot of research!!! It will make your life a heck of a lot easier.... go to the akc website purely fr information abou breeds... if you get a mix, expect all of the traits of all the breeds that the dog is..

Puppyfinder.com is one it tells about the breed and what they look like it will also give a list of other addresses to search you can also go to the SPCA of your city/county on line. If this is your first puppy or not I definetly suggest gettting pet insurance wether a purebred or a mix they can be very costly and just like children they get hurt, sick, need their shots, swallow things the list goes on and on. Good luck with your new pup.

All these sites except AKC.com and petfinder.com are crap. To many puppy millers and puppy brokers on these other sites.

Petfinder.com lists only rescues and shelters on them. They have a TON of puppies in every breed.

AKC.com is great to research breeds

Please don't "buy" a puppy from these other sites...if you need a good reason why Google "puppy mill" and look at the pictures of where those dogs tend to come from.

If you don't know what breed to get, start by looking at PetFinder. The site will give you an idea about dogs available in your area.

Once you see a dog you like, please spend some time researching the breed to see whether the dog will be compatible with your lifestyle. Different breeds require different amounts of exercise, training, leadership, and knowledge.

You can go to www.nextdaypets.com, and look in the dog breed section. They list a lot of different breeds, and it gives a description of the breeds and a picture too. Ypu should find a breed you think is cute but will also fit into your lifestyle.

Erm, to be honest i wouldnt advise buying a dog on looks. but if u want a small (but not toy) dog with a good temproment i would advise cocker spaniels. they are VERY cute and are lovely dogs but above all they are really smart. if u want a big dog i woould advise a flat coated retriever, they are great dogs, however they do require alot of time, patience and walks. they are really beautiful dogs though. Oh yer and lots of peaple said adopt and yer it is a really great thing to do but sometimes dogs are really affected by their past and i always think that adopting a puppy is best if adopting at all.
