Well, it sounds like there are only five sides included on the surface area. So just find the area of all five sides and add them up.
Top = 30*20 = 600
Left = 20*12 = 240
Right = 20*12 = 240
Front = 30*12 = 360
Back = 30*12 = 360
Base = 0
Surface Area = 600+240+240+360+360 = 1800

Normally the object would have a surface area equal to the area of its 6 sides. This one only has 5 sides: 2 ends, 2 sides and 1 top
so, end area = 12 x 20 x 2 = 480
side area = 12 x 30 x 2 = 720
top area = 20 x 30 = 600
Adding these = 1800 total surface
