Cats communicate using many types of meows. At some point, your cat will probably have used each of them when conversing with you. Meowing is typically a cat-to-human interaction, although kittens will use it to communicate with their mothers. Meows are usually calls for attention, especially short meows. Meows with increased duration convey a sense of urgency--we may hear it when cats are requesting to be fed. Prolonged meows may also indicated distress, especially when paired with restlessness or pacing.

That's how they speak. We talk to communicate and animals can't understand us. When the meow, it's like there talking to one another! They also beg us when they meow, but they don't know that we can't hear them!
