Homework is very valuable. I'm not a fan of memorizing, because it doesn't show that you know the concept (math is an exception). It's very necessary because it forces you to learn concepts, and keeps your mind going. What I don't like is that teachers don't treat everyone individually to their learning styles, very much of the time it is very general. The best teachers are the ones that give you homework that helps you learn the best way! For example, I learn by doing, even if I make mistakes. The point is that I'm learning! So there's a few pros and cons. Stick with it, I promise it will help you later in life!

Honestly, I don't think it does. I have a 14 year old who is in the 9th grade. She's a bright kid, but her grades are uneven. In the classes where the teacher discusses the subject matter with the kids and they work on projects in class, she does very well. But even if she's interested in a subject, if the teacher assigns nightly busy work her interest will wane and her grades will drop. This type of memorization is only beneficial to some students. People have many different ways of learning, and this method just doesn't work for all people. As a result, many extremely intelligent kids who are non-conventional learners become frustrated with the educational experience and don't reach their full potential.

When I get off work at the end of the day, I prefer to leave the job at the office, as do many of us. Kids don't have that luxury. Schools are so rigid these days and they expect kids to be there solely to learn their subjects. Well, if they're spending several hours a night on homework, when are they supposed to learn the other important lessons that a well balanced human should learn? When are they supposed to experience life? Many would say that if they don't have homework they'll just rot in front of the TV, and that is true in some cases, but not all kids are like that. Our kids work hard in school. At the end of the day, they deserve to be able to put aside their studies and enjoy life. Play outside, pursue a hobby or read a great book. Our kids aren't sucking the marrow out of life, we're sucking the life out of them.

Pardon the rant, this has been a great source of frustration for my family throughout my daughters school career.

Homework is given out all over the world. Right now i am doing a persuasive essay on the pros and cons of having homeowork. I personally hate homework , like any other child. If you dont understand something during the class then ask. Yes, most children are embarrased to ask but you can always get a tutor. It takes too much time out of our pleasure time and reduces our socialbility. IT SHOULD BE BANNED! or at least reduced a lot :)

I think homework helps you practice and retain what you learned. In college, I had math professors who would give us "suggested problems" that were never picked up or checked at all. The first class that happened in, I thought if I went to class and took notes and things made sense, I didn't have to do the suggested problems. Failing the first test miserably changed my mind. Practice problems are good. You learn how to think your way through the same type of problems that will be on the test, so when you finally see the test, you can pass it.

How does anyone learn? By memorization, homework helps to instill the lessons you learned in class. It helps the teacher know how well you're doing and it's a benefit to yourself to see how well you know your stuff. If you can't ace homework that's open book, what makes you think you'll pass the test?
