They believed in preserving the earth and using whatever you could from your hunt. For example, the buffalo was used completely. I think they were on the right track with "respect for mother earth" and all.

The answer above mine is right.I follow the religion of the ancient Celts and like the beliefs of the Native Americans these were based on respect for the world and trying to understand nature.Faiths like this existed all over the world-the Romans,Egyptians,Greeks,Vikings and every other ancient culture had it's own way of seeing things that had similarities to each other to some degree.
Basically if you don't have a religous book like the bible or don't believe the truth comes from books you have to believe that Gods or Spirits or whatever your faith calls the being who control everything will tell you what to do using visions or omens or natural signs.

yes, they believe in The Great Spirit and Nature. Shamanism is the best answer to understand where religion came from and to understand spirituality. Shamanism isn't only a Native American belief there are ancient cultures all over the world that practised this path without knowing of one another, it's like they were getting their knowledge straight from the source, no human books needed, only the spirit and it's 'book' called nature.

The Native American religion was a naturalistic religion that did not rely on revealed texts. That is exactly what I believe as a Deist. I certainly do not believe everything they believed, but I do think they took the right approach to God. The way to find out about God is through his genuine creation which is within us, and all around us. The Bible is not a creation of God, it is a creation of man.

HELLO, to all those who are saying that the Native American religion was barbaric, have you ever read the Old Testament? It is totally repulsive!! According to the Old Testament, most Christians should have been stoned to death by now.

Any religion that teaches you altruism, respect for the environment and wisdom is "right", which covers a whole lot of religions other than just Native American spirituality. Wiccans and neo-Pagans have that market just as cornered... as does Buddhism... so I'd say that Native Americans aren't the only ones.

I'm glad we don't follow the American Indian way. It was a very brutal society. I know that is sounded like love and daisy picking when your teacher told you about it, but in reality Indian religion was very subjective, just like other non educated societies. People were murdered on the whim of the medicine man, children were left to starve to death, women were seen as property.

In case you haven't noticed, mother nature has a mean streak, and only the fittest survive. The Natives in america knew this and lived in the same way.

How much do you really know about native American religious practices? They were barbaric and worshiped the earth and animals rather than God. Check out the meaning of the totem pole.

Rom 1:22 Professing to be wise, they became foolish
Rom 1:23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into a likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed animals, and creeping things.
Rom 1:24 Because of this, God gave them up to impurity in the lusts of their hearts, their bodies to be dishonored among themselves,
Rom 1:25 who changed the truth of God into the lie, and worshiped and served the created thing more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
