I think they are the best. I know 20 people that own a greyhound. It is the perfect companion. I hope that more people join in adopting these gorgeous animals.

I obviously think they're great or I wouldn't have 3 of them!!

I foster as well and haven't yet met a greyhound I wouldn't want to keep. They're the quietest dogs in the house of any I've ever had, extremely easy to train, and totally affectionate. These dogs' personalities just blossom the more attention you give them.

Having said all that, they're not for everyone. Those who believe dogs belong outside or on the floor or who believe that you should always be "alpha" with every dog, should never get a greyhound. They will not thrive with that kind of treatment.

Not such a nice greyhound story.... read on.

In May 2005 we found an abandoned greyhound in Spain. It was seriously malnourished and was covered in open sores, tics and fleas... It had the debilitating disease Leishmaeniosis which was destroying her kidneys and liver, as well as causing horrible skin problems.

We immediately took her home, and after 8 months of daily injections of glucantime, zyloric tablets, and regular protegrams to check her organ functions, we finally got her to fantastic condition, and she even won a dog show, Prettiest b*tch, and Champion of champions....

Then the problems started...

She was always in the company of our other dogs..(we had 13 !)
and cats (we had 13 !!) and never a problem, then, for some strange reason, she started killing our cats. Despite our best efforts, which even included locking her in a compound of 30' x 60' of galvanized chainlink whilst we were out...she ate the concrete at the bottom, and then unbelievably unpicked the chainlink...she would have lacerations around her jaw.. she would get out, and eat the cats..
Each time, we took a stricter measure, but she would defy
these efforts, get out and kill a cat and eat it.
Altogether Stella killed 7 of our cats.

It got to the point where we had no choice but to have her put down.

She was a lovely placid dog, and by getting her healthy, all her instincts came back, and she became a hunter.
I would never recommend this breed to anyone with small dogs, cats, or young children...and depsite years of admiring thier apparently placid nature...take it from me they are startlingly efficient hunters...

Believe it or not Stella could see off our 35 Kilo GSD, and was so powerful that it was actually frightening....

On the sofa she would curl up in a small ball and look so frail and thin, and she would melt into mush if you stroked her ears and spoke softly to her.....you just wouldnt believe how gentle she could appear.

I will never have a greyhound again, and whilst I miss her terribly
I am not sorry we had her put down.

I do....I love greyhounds. When I was a child my best friend's father had greyhounds and they were lovely.

One little lady would not follow the hare (electronic hare) so she was kept as a pet and a more loving dog you would search far to find. She would sit by us as we played and nuzzle us and was such a beautiful pet.

Some owners care little about the dogs and as soon as their racing is over they are thrown aside. If you can ,you should give one (or two) of these lovely dogs a home. You will never regret it.

Love you for thinking about them.x

i have had 2 greyhounds both rescue dogs, they gave me many years of pleasure and must be the easiest dog to look after in the world(providing its not spent years rcing, as may have a problem with chasing) they require very little excercise, love the comforts in life are very gentle.

We have a greyhound cross and we couldn't wish for a better behaved more intelligent dog, she is affectionate and if you feel down she can be asleep but somehow she knows and comes to you , I'll be honest after losing my parent's she has kept me and my family sane.

I love ALL dogs! Especially my 2 Dobermans Bo and Luke. Greyhounds are cool dogs too. I don't like races though, I think it's cruel.

Why dont poeple like them they are the most affectionate and lovin dogs. I had one for 4 years and unfortunatly she died of old age but i will never forget her. I just dont understand why people always go for the andrex puppies style i think people who do that are shallow and materialised.(as if they are embarrased or something) sorry if i have offended anyone but it is true.

I know, they are the best. But I just found out they are the least intelligent. Sorry, that's my favourite dog, as well, but apparently their brain size doesn't help them to much.
