For Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!

2007-02-05 08:02:02 · 4 answers · asked by Anonymous in Sports Martial Arts

The reason I ask this is because of a previous question I asked I was told the same answer as you 3+ years. I have had the unusual opportunity to train with several black belts and the answer is always the same whether in Brazil or in the US it takes 7-10 years to get a Black Belt in BJJ. It is also impossible to get it if you are under 18 unless you are in good enough shape to train and submit full grown adults. I am assuming you don't train in BJJ which is okay because I don't expect anyone who doesn't to have an appropriate answer in this question. Thank you and Aloha.

In 20+ years of studying Martial Arts the Black Belt question is always the most annoying.

Normally when someone asks me if I have a black belt I always ask them to tell me the difference between Black and Brown.

When you are focused on training to be able to talk about the belt ranking you received, then it's all for the wrong reason.

And on the topic ever single student learns at a completely separate rate. Study and train every single day and understand the first time around and could you have the belt in a few years, maybe. Likely 3+ years.

Remember, that will just mean you've mastered the basics.

If you train hard, I have seen some really good BJJ Black Belts in 10+ years... .NOTHING ever below that to me is worth a damn.

To the guy below me....

You know what is funny.... to see someone train in a striking art and get his black belt, enter an MA comp and then get submitted in under 30 seconds.... thats funny!

point being? Its not all or nothing... its a little of everything that makes you a good fighter. hard to punch someone when you have no air to breathe.

My black-belt instructor trained in Brazil and he said it took him around ten years to get his black belt.

the belt means nothing.martial arts is a never ending journey,a black belt is just the begining of that journey.and it doesnt take 10 years to get a bb in bjj.unless you only train half an hour a week.

You know what is funny is to see a guy train in BJJ earn his black belt and then enter an MMA fight and get KO'd in a minute. That is funny. It happens alot and every time I laugh.

Okay sorry to get off topic. I've seen non brazilian schools give them out in 3 years. If you get them too easy it doesn't mean as much. There is too much emphasis placed on the black belt.
