When I got my kitten a few years ago, I didn't know what kind to buy either. I started out looking in pet stores and just seeing what was available. The key for me was the personality. When I found my little guy - he noozled his nose in the crook of my nose and I guess you could say it was love at first sight. I would recommend looking more towards personality than a specific breed.

The right kitten is a very personal choice, but I do have one piece of advice. Don't get a VERY young one. Just like a newborn baby, young kittens are just cute balls of fur, but you really don't know if they are "nice." When all is said and done, personality is more important than the looks. Try getting one that is about 6 - 9 months old. Then they have developed their personality and you have a better idea of how good a pet it will be.

The right kitten would be the one that you save from being killed. Shelter pets need a home more than breeders and pet stores need your money. Save a life and adopt instead. Petfinder.com is an excellent resource for any breed of kitten that you would want.

Go to your local shelter and pick the kitten that no one else would take.

Purebreds are very temperamental, and often come from situations where cats are mass bred with no care for health or personality.

Shelter kittens are fixed and have all the shots and medical check ups needed.

You've saved a life and can feel good about your pet.

Good luck.

Definitely watch for their personality. My kitten had a really playful personality, with these really crazy eyes that cracked me up. Sure enough when I got him he was absolutely loony, but tons of fun. Figure out what you want personality wise and go from there. Watching how they interact with the other kittens is usally a good indicator.

personal choice. some go for friendly affectionate kittens. i go for runts, neurotic or shy kittens since the others will stand a better chance of good homes anyway. the anti-social ones take a bit more work & may retain a "wild edge", but they are perfectly capable of making good, balanced companions with a little love & patience.

The right kitten for you is the one that shows some affection towards you at first site. Or the one that is the most , i dont know how to put, the most you like. like the quiet one, loud one, funny one , cute one etc. etc.

trust me i have 2 kittens

Pick one from your local shelter to adopt. You can find many different breeds there.
Also if you have never owned a kitten before you might do some research on how to take care of one since you have some time before you get one.

Go to a shelter and interact with them. You'll know when you are holding your kitten. I found mine on Petfinder.com and knew when I saw them, but the decision was cemented when I 'met' them.
