Since early this morning my 4 month old puppy has been working relentlessly at clearing his throat. It's like he's trying to work up the world's biggest loogie but nothing happens. He's still been playing, eating, drinking water, walking and napping well. But any of his free time is spent trying to cough 'something' up.

Is there anything I can do to help him? We'll take him to the vet tomorrow if it persists. But right now he's just coughing up spittle at best.

please help

Kennel cough ... off to the vet. Don't worry it is very common.

IF it is a dry hacking cough where he is just coughing and it seems like nothing is happening and it appears to be worse at night or when laying down those are PRIME indicators of Bordatella or Kennel Cough. Puppies are extremely susceptible to it and it can be solved with a $5 shot from the vet. Try the shot first, don't go into the vet over-reacting like some of the posts here. They love that and see it as an immediate opportunity for xrays and additional income for their ski trip to the Swiss Alps. Get the shot. If not better in two days get antibiotics, if that doesn't work then discuss xrays.

I would get him to the vet, like now! This could well be a sign that he swallowed something that is now causing a blockage, and worst case it could kill him... Not to scare you, because it could be something else, but when it comes to my dogs I always play it conservatively. There's also a strain of canine influenza going around that has proved deadly to puppies and adult dogs.

Another, less drastic, thought - it could be that he picked up a case of "kennel cough" somewhere. Has he been anywhere outside of your yard, where he was exposed to other dogs? The treatment for this is really simple - antibiotics for 10 days. Good luck!

Either your dog has eaten something that is irritating his throat or he could have kennel cough. If you got your new puppy from an SPCA or if the dog has been exposed to other dogs, kennel cough is likely as it is very contagious.

Regardless, he should see a vet immediately.

Ummm... Call your vet NOW...

Your baby has been coughing for hours and you are going to wait until TOMORROW?!!? HELLO???

CALL THE VET. It sounds like he's got a blockage. Maybe he ate a sock, a piece of a toy, a bone or something. He needs to be seen now.

My dog swallowed a sock. Sounds like no big deal it lodged in his intestine and he almost died. I wish he had tried to vomit so I would've known. Your pup is telling you he is choking. CALL THE VET NOW.

Take him to the vet...things to check him for: kennel cough, roundworms, puppy strangles. All 3 need medication.

Sounds like kennel cough, keep him away from other dogs, it is easily transmited to other dogs, and get him to a vet

sounds like kennel cough to me. my pup had a small bout with it. its easily cared for, just some antibiotics. our vet even had us giving her robotussin to sooth the cough and keep it from developing full blown kennel cough. she didnt like it tho, and we just had a sticky puppy coughing it up in my boyfriends face (i wish i had seen that!)

get him to a vet. could be something stuck in his throat, could be something more serious. play safe. hopefully it's something easily fixed, if! it is the worst case, at least (the gods forbid) he can be put out of his misery. he doesn't deserve to choke or suffocate.
