I have a friend in Fresno that doesn't drive. Flying is too expensive and so is a cab of course. There is the train+bus option ($60) as a backup.

Anyone know anything better? Maybe a shuttle service? Or a direct bus?

Thanks!

The three most popular services are Amtrak which requires a bus connection in Bakersfield to continue southward, Greyhound which does have direct buses but is not too reliable these days and Intercalifornias bus which runs direct buses from downtown LA to Fresno for about $20. If you have the time and are feeling really adventurous you could use public transit to make the trip. The local city/county bus systems connect with each other all throughout California and you could travel from LA to/from Fresno for less than $10 each way using that method, although several connections are required.

Fresno To La

Amtrak is the best way to go. I used to live in Fresno and always made the trip that way. Your friend would catch the train at the downtown Fresno Amtrak Station, which would end in Bakersfield. Then he/she would catch a connecting Amtrak bus to either the LA train station depot or to any of the many Southern California bus stops (like Pasadena, Riverside, etc...)
It is by far the cheapest and most comfortable way to travel down there, besides driving yourself. Besides, I heard that Hwy 99 (which is the main fwy leading down there) is down to 1 lane in parts (massive road construction), so your pal would be much better off avoiding that hwy.
Good luck!

Take the 190 to the 99 S to the 5 S. It takes about 4-5 hrs. Long drive if you're not use to it. Lots of trucks. I drive to Porterville quite often which is about 1-2 hrs from Fresno. Gray hound will take longer and I truly don't think they go that route straight, they have layovers.

the train is the best bet yes you will have to transfer to a bus
in Bakersfield, I advise everyone to AVIOD GREYHOUND AT
ALL COST as they have a very bad habit of leaving you
stranded or the bus comes and you have to stand on the bus
then the Greyhound depot in Los Angeles is smack dab in the middle of skid row!
now if you are more adventure some type of person
there is local transit from Fresno to Hanford (from the children's hospital or Kaiser) -to Hanford ( Kings county transit)
then the same bus I believes continues to Visalia, then you connect
with Visalia coach which connects you to Turale transit
to turale then you change again to Turlane county to
Delano, then from Delano to Bakersfield with Kern County
then change again another Kern County bus to Lancaster
then Metrolink to Los Angeles

Interstate 5. Bus but slow and tiring. No train south of Bakersfield but you can connect to bus from there.
