Was pond of fire not scary enough? Was Ocean of fire too much?
What about a pit of knives and maggots, filled with camel urine? Was that also too much?

The separation from God for etnernity while finally knowing what He is really like is such a horrible concept that only our worst nightmares were used to describe that pain.

I like how you split hairs, that's humorous. They probably weren't anywhere near an ocean and the biggest body of water around was a lake at the time. Who knows? Perhaps the author wasn't an English major and he couldn't think of anything more intriguing or "glamorous" for his "Hell" description.

Ponds are too small and oceans lead into other oceans and rivers. Lakes are bigger than ponds and don't lead anywhere and they have no currents. I think they did it to scare people, personally. It didn't work on me.

Because it's good symbolic language to describe a black hole where the gravity causes time to slow almost to a stop, and where the temperature is far hotter than a fire actually is.
