Greetings. I was trimming my one-and-a-half-year-old cat's claws for the first time, using a special cat-claw clipper, and one of his back claws split a bit near the tip when I trimmed it (and he yowled!). There was no bleeding and he wasn't upset afterward (he's sleeping happily now!), but I am wondering if he could get an infection and if I should bring him to the vet. Thank you so much for your help.

so long as it's not bleeding, he's fine.

Hi there!
Most likely, your cat will be fine. All cat owners accidently cut into the quick of their cat's claws at least once in a lifetime! Felines also shed their claws, so that might have been what you saw. If, however, you notice puss around the paw pads or it starts to swell, I recommend you take the cat to the vet for further inspection. For now, don't worry about it.
Good luck!

I wouldn't be concerned -- this is natural - layers come away. As long as there's no bleeding, it's not a concern. Even if there's a little bleeding (meaning you cut too high up), it's highly unlikely that there would be any dangers except that it will make it difficult to cut the claws next time because the cat will be afraid you'll hurt him.

You're probably OK, but when you do trim the claws, be sure you only clip off the ends. Look at his claws next time - see that darker area inside, back away from the very end? Don't cut that deep. It would be like trimming all of the white part off of your fingernails, and back to where they are next to the nailbed. It's not serious, but it's painful.

He'll be fine. Cats shed their claws, and that's likely what you saw cracking and coming off. I find little "claw sheeths" or whatever they're called all around the house.

if the split is not near or does not reach the cats paw then i believe your cat will be fine. any animal will complain when you trim or clip their claws.

he'll be fine, sometimes they have dry claws and they split, happened to my cat all the time, especially in the dry canadian winters, your cat probably yowled because it twisted a bit as it split, don't worry.

It'll be fine. They crack their own claws in the wild on occasion. Just check it in about 3 days to make sure its growing back ok.

It happens sometimes. Watch him for a few days. If he pays a lot of attention to it, or if he starts favoring another leg, he'll need to go to the vet.

Cats nails do that all the time. Make sure you do not go near the quick. It can be bad if they start bleeding.

Its no ig deal but NEVER cut close to or on the pinkish part, it will be very painful for him and may causes problems.
