The military is meeting 100% of their recruiting needs so they can afford to maintain the standards.

Generally most NCOs feel that being short a soldier is better than having to deal with 'what they can get.'

Don't think they are taking just anyone as why would you want to put dregs and scum in such a position. Some Dem politicos and some old time libs like to berate and degrade the military as being just a bunch of poor blacks and high school dropouts. Those days ended with the end of the draft. Its a small army these days but its pretty high tech. Also, I noted that a judge in my region said that the idea of sending people to the Army in lieu of jail has not be done for at least twenty years. You can go if you can make the grade and have a sack. I can tell you this most of the people scared silly in your generation are white kids from the upper middle class. Blacks, Asians and Hispanics are doing fine, thank you, and there are fine young white guys there too but the ones whinning and sweating a draft or military service are all neutered lillies.

Not everyone who joins the army is automatically sent to Iraq. In fact, only 50% of the entire army has deployed to Iraq. It really depends on more factors than the fact that we have a war going on in Iraq and President Bush wants to send more troops. Geesh. Settle down.

I have a varied group of friends and some of their boys are in Iraq and have returned. I have never heard of the select going only. Whilst our men are there I would hate to think that it was by "anyone they could get", they are putting their lives on the line and well done to each and every one of them.

in the US, only four out of ten people between the ages of 17-42 are even remotely qualified to enlist.

Most are disqualified because of the following: fail the ASVAB test, physical issues, too many convictions, single parents...

of those four who are qualified, few actually want to enlist.

That is quite a vague question. In certain trades if you're very good at your job, they won't send you out there, but in others you will.

They'll take anyone. If you join, then chances are you will be in Iraq within a few weeks or months.

If you can read (and sometimes not) and are somewhat healthy, you have a good chance if you want.. They don't seem to have too high of standards for the willing..
