I may be moving to the Philadelphia area and want to know what areas in or near Philly are good for raising children (safe, good schools, etc.). What are the more expensive neighborhoods or suburbs (not that I'll necessarily be able to afford to live there, but I'd like to have an idea of what the best places are to live)?

In Bucks County where you'll be about an hour's commute from the city:
Churchville
Holland
Newtown
Richboro
Doylestown
Chalfont
Warrington
Jamison
These areas have top-rated school districts (Central Bucks and Council Rock). The average home price is 350-400K
Good Luck!

Lancaster County is probably the best place. After visiting PA several times we found that Lancaster County with the Amish and Mormons make a beautiful, peaceful setting. There are many farms, farm animals and excellent restaurants. In addition there are several gift shops of all kinds, tourist rides, music, etc. Being a large state, you can enjoy the tour of the pretzel bakeries, Hershey's chocolate plant, and the Allegheny Mountains that cross the state from the northwestern part to the southeastern part. Close to Philadelphia there are small towns like Pittston and Scranton that once mined coal.

Middle Bucks is really nice but DO NOT send your kid to Council Rock. Although it is a "top- rated" school, the teachers are only there for the pay check and do a half-assed job at teaching. You'll see this every time their contract is about to expire, they will start threatening to go on strike. Even if its at the end of the year and means screwing up the seniors graduating (this actually happened my senior year and the students had a walkout to protest it) Plus they hire complete nuts (Example My one English teacher used to freak out and scream at us, yet at the end of class she would try passing around treats because we were so good)

Plus their elementary schools were just as horrible. I was sent to the school psychiatrist quite a few times for reading books that were "too above" my reading level. And since I rather spend my time reading those books instead of socializing they wanted my mother to get my IQ tested, because they thought something was wrong with me.

I would say though the most expensive area would be Middle Bucks. More specifically New Hope/ Salsbury and Newtown/Holland/Richboro.
