My sister-in-law from time to time says I don't know what it is about you that got my brother wanting to be married.. She says I'm still trying to figure it out; but he does love you.. Now what in the hell is that supposed to mean? I know that his family is still very close to his children's mother.... Is she insulting me on the sly, or is she saying that she is surprised that her brother is wanting to settle down? Oh yeah, I am older than him.

It sounds like a back-handed compliment to me. But she's family - you have to deal with her. Sit her down alone and tell her it's hurtful - you'll pretty much find out by her reaction whether she's been unknowingly insensitive, or intentionally nasty.

At least then you'll know how to deal with her going forward.

Is she generally a nice person, or is she the kind of person who would insult you? It really could go either way. Did his ex hurt him terribly? because if she did, then maybe she (sister in law) is surprised that he would consider marrying, and is impressed by how much he loves you.

Why not ask her by saying, "Why do you wonder about something like that?" Or "Tell me what you mean by that." I've found the best way to find exactly what a person means is by asking THEM, not guessing or asking someone else.
